Summary
There was a woman kneeling on the bed. She was, against all of Jinshi's bets, a courtesan, for no noblewomen would be dressed as she was. A bright yellow and orange sleeveless dress clung to her petite frame, scandalously bare arms covered by a gauzy shawl, her glossy hair carefully done up with red flowers and heavy make up battling against her features.
Jinshi barely recognized her. Probably wouldn't have at all, if he hadn't seen her dolled up before. A noise between a choke and a whine left his mouth before he could help himself.
The woman, who had been staring submissively at the ground, finally looked up. Upon seeing Jinshi, the placid, almost hollow look in her eyes melted into a familiar assessing gaze.
“Master Jinshi?” The apothecary said, tilting her head.
Worried about his brother's depressive slump after the mass dimissal of maids from the rear palace, the Emperor gets him a gift.

Maomao stopped rolling her mill grinder at this to reach out and swipe away the bowl. "This is not an experiment, sir."
"No? What are you up to then, hm?" Jinshi-sama practically batted his eyelashes at her, though it was useless. As beautiful as the eunuch was, his looks and charm had no effect on Maomao - she was as impassive and unimpressed as the granite of her mortar and pestle. Yet, he continued on each day, as if he meant to wear her down.
or LN2 what if, where Jinshi helps Maomao grind one out, so to speak.

Summary
Maomao did not have much care for banquets or birth days, but she did care for her husband. So it was the thought of bringing him a modicum of comfort, that she committed herself to learning Suiren's recipe and technique, taking care to replicate it.
Having received the lady-in-waiting's seal of approval, Suiren only reminded her of the hour in which she would need to bathe in order to prepare for the banquet before leaving Maomao to her own devices. She spent the afternoon boiling sugars and pouring molds, stretching out the fine filament and rolling the bundles, until the counter space was covered with the small, white puffs of spun sugar.
Now, Maomao looks around at the treats before lifting one up to just beyond her nose, inspecting its web-like exterior closely, smelling the nuttiness. It felt tacky to the touch, quickly sticking to her skin. Curious as always, Maomao opened her mouth to try the thing - quality control, of course - but just as the treat hit her tongue, a voice, heaven-spun and mouthwateringly sweet in it's own right, sounded right in her ear. "Hello, my dear."
or, Maomao prepares Jinshi a treat on his birth day, but he has something more in mind.
