He’s truly a lost cause. Completely hopeless.
If he hadn’t been before, then nearly dying certainly would’ve done it.
Even the fugue version of himself had been enamored with her from the moment he opened his eyes and saw her hovering by his bedside. When he’d been standing inside his house in Malibu, when all the realization and rush of feelings had hit him at once, the first discernible thoughts he could muster were of her.

Summary
A few hours later, Lisbon winds herself around his body, under his arm, as she helps him hobble out of the airport. The man he was before would call this a win. But this is not winning, this is his path back to that peace he had in her arms all those months ago. She has now seen him as he is: that trembling, dark animal in the road, flayed open to his grieving and greedy soul, unable to escape the horrors of the open road. But Lisbon has stopped the car for him. She’s taking him home.
Peace is coming.

Summary
With his first wife, Jane had no concept of what it would be like to lose everything. Now that he knows that pain, he clings all the tighter. It's complicated. His thoughts about Lisbon range from acceptable to physically impossible. He wants to put a ring on her finger. He wants to bring her flowers. He wants to read her mind. He wants to violate the principle of impenetrability and occupy the same space as her. If he could carry her with him everywhere he goes, maybe that would be enough to soothe his battered and ruined heart.

Summary
“You’ve been running a con on me,” Lisbon accuses him, but she can’t help the smile tugging at her lips.
Jane huffs. “Of course I have. Teresa, I’ve been running the most transparent, gentle con of my life on you.” He pauses, eyes scanning her face, taking in her lack of anger with relief. “To be frank, I hesitate to call it a con when I’m practically laying my intentions at your feet.”
