"Am I going to be okay?" she asked instead.
Her mother looked at her for a moment. Then she put her arm around Coco's shoulders and pulled her close, so close their bodies could have merged if it were possible.
"I am going to make sure you will." she promised. "That's different from okay right now. But it's what matters. It's going to be okay."
Coco leaned into her and decided that was a good enough answer.

"...So, what if I — I mean, we, since I'm sure Tetia and Richeh might like to help, too — slept in the same room as you? Like... a sleepover, I suppose." She wrinkles her nose slightly at the term, feeling awfully juvenile for saying it with such seriousness. "Um, the idea is that after a bit you'll end up being able to fall asleep better on your own, perhaps. Really, it's more of a temporary fix, but…"
When Coco reveals that her nightmares seem to dissipate whenever she falls asleep around her, Agott proposes a sort of short-term solution to the other girl's nighttime ailments. Somehow, it becomes more than just a thing to solve a problem, and Agott makes a few realizations along the way.

“Close your eyes,” Coco said, so quietly it was almost a whisper.
Behind her shut eyelids, every sound and feeling magnified as Coco brushed her remaining un-cut hair to the front. The comb’s teeth on her scalp. Coco's breath, so close. And this, too: How quiet she was, as if waiting for something.
Snip . The first part of her bangs fell to the floor.
“Can I tell you something, too?” Coco said, almost too quietly to make out.
“Sure.”
Anything, she didn't add. Please tell me anything.
Agott doesn't recognize herself in the mirror anymore, but Coco is there to help.

Agott doesn’t hate Coco. She doesn’t think she ever did. Whatever she felt back then wasn’t hate– it was bright and strong, sure, but not hate. So now, as Coco’s problem makes itself ever more serious– waiting for her, patient and terrible, set silently at the foot of her childhood home– Agott realizes something unfortunate. She seems to refuse to simply leave Coco to bear her problems alone.
Agott knows magic like the back of her hand, after all. She knows magic, and she knows it well— and if she’s learned anything from the past year, it’s that two pens are always better than one.
(And all the while this feeling, this not-dislike, coils through Agott’s heart like spring flowers, petals unfurling gently within her soul. Perhaps… there is still a bit more she has to realize.)
