Every exposed gap of skin is a raw, stripped nerve. Vein’s curious thumb presses into his jugular like the searing of a propane lighter pressed into a vulnerability; rubs small, slow circles into skin and waits out the aftershocks moving through him. Liu Xiao thinks he can feel each groove and swirl of Vein’s thumbprint against the trembling line of his throat. Liu Xiao doesn’t think: sensation raw and white-hot, too much, everything gutted to animal instinct.

“It’s just one bite. And if it’s Vein you’re worried about…” Liu Xiao’s voice drops to a conspiratorial whisper. “It’ll be our little secret.”
Felix recoils into his seat.
“I said no.”
Liu Xiao smiles with all the warmth of a snake bearing its fangs. “Such restraint.”
He takes his time licking the syrup from his fingers.
Felix’s hands are curled tightly in his lap, and he looks everywhere but at Liu Xiao. No doubt wishing they were already at their destination. Too bad for him, Liu Xiao had already taken pains to ensure their route would be stretched out, much like his restraint had to be.
Such resolve, he can’t wait to see it finally shatter.Perhaps Liu Xiao hasn’t been paying Felix proper attention at all.
