A Hundred Shades of Doubt

Chapter 2: You Have No Proof

Summary:

Fictober 2021 Prompt #2: “You have no proof”

Chapter Text

“Major, as much faith as I have in your abilities, you have no proof that you’ll be able to replicate Sokar’s technology within a year, by which time all your effort and money sunk into the research project will have been in vain. Not to mention, you’d be off SG-1 for an extended period-”

“Sir, with respect, we can’t put a price on the Colonel’s life. We have no idea of the atmospheric or meteorological fallout from that impact and the ash and debris that would have been thrown up into the atmosphere. They could be facing an early winter, and if the crops there all die off, it would be a stretch to assume the Colonel and the other Edorans would even last six months.”

He admired her passionate argument, and didn’t have the heart to mention the fact that certain experts at the Pentagon had already put the Colonel’s odds at even surviving the initial impact at being a slim ten percent; his long-term odds even lower than that. But knowing the passionate scientist before him, he was sure she already knew that, and so, if she wasn’t willing to give up on the Colonel, then nor was he.

“All right Major, you’ve made your point. You have one more week to bring me your best estimate for the costs and timescale of the research needed to replicate Sokar’s particle beam. Use anyone you need from the Science Department, and if your plan falls within a reasonable timeline and budget, I’ll pass on my recommendation to my superiors. But that’s the best I can do. Dismissed.”

“Thank you, Sir,” and he watched as she gave him a smart salute before darting from his office, clearly eager to return to her lab.
