Chapter Text

Izuku was in class, anxiously awaiting the end of last period. He was tired, but if he wanted to avoid the bullies, he woud have to be out of his seat as soon as the bell rung. He really wasn’t in the mood to be pushed around today. He forgot his „lunch“ (an apple and a bottle of water) at home, he didn’t sleep well (again) and just wanted to go home. Though… he atleast saw a villain fight on his way to school.

Today Mt. Lady had her debut as a new pro hero, and her quirk seemed so cool, I bet hero.net will have at least fifty articles on her by the end of the day-

Meanwhile, Mr. Tanaka talked about high school applications. He quietly raised his hand along with everyone in class when Mr. Tanaka asked who wants to apply to a hero school and Bakugo started bragging about being better than everyone else and going to UA.

“Oh Midoryia, you wanted to apply to the UA hero course too right?“ Mr. Tanaka questioned and the whole class went quiet, even Bakugo. Izuku felt his throat tighten, his stomach became heavy, his hand clenching his pencil as he felt everyone's eyes land on him.

The scilence was unbareable “U-uh… um, y- yeah“ stop looking at me, just stop staring please- “Midoryia? You’re kidding right?“ “There’s no way he’s serious!“ “He wants to get to the Hero course without a quirk! Pfft-“ The class roared with laughter and mean comments

“A- actually they got rid of that rule a-… few years ago.“ Izuku said quietly before he even thought of anything else. Suddenly a hand slammed down on his desk and the bell rung, Mr. Tanaka left the classroom and when he tried to reach for his back bakugo growled “Who the fuck do you think you are Deku?! You think you even stand a chance in making it to UA!?!“ Izuku moved back trying to put some space between them.

“N- no! No Kacchan- I just- I just wanted to try-! I- I wouldn’t d-dare t-to compare myself t-to you!“ Izuku pleaded, while he shook his head and hands frantically. Bakugo just stomped towards Izuku as little sparks flicked in his palms like tiny fireworks. Izuku scrmbled back and then his back hit the blackboard. He had nowhere to run. Bakugo stomped up to him and exploded Izuku’s notebook, that he’d apperently grabbed of his desk in the meantime.

He tossed the burnt notebook out of the open classroom window, and Izuku could only watch in horror as months of hard work were destroyed right before his eyes and he couldn’t do anything about it. Then Bakugo grabbed his shoulder.

Slowly Izuku started feeling heat spreading from where Bakugo was grabbing his shoulder. “Listen here Deku! A quirkless nobody like you has no chance of getting into UA! Got that!? You’re just a useless freak, don’t you dare get in my way.“ As he talked Izuku felt the heat increaseing, and then, hot pain started eating away at where his skin was burning under Bakugo’s touch.

He felt the uniform burning, and the bandages on his shoulder burning along with his skin under the heat. The bandages that kept his secret hidden. The bandages that hid the few ugly scars that were permanently on his body. The bandages that were holding his true self, were burning.

Izuku was so excited to get a quirk. The sooner time came to his fourth birthday, the more he kept thinking if his mom’s or dad’s quirk would be cooler to have, and which would be better for being a hero.

When he went to sleep the night before his fourth birthday with his head and back itching and hurting a little, he thought nothing of if. He told his mom and she gave him extra kisses when she tucked him in. And he fell asleep hopeful, that when he woke up, he’ll finally have a quirk.

And it happend. When he woke up he felt something odd on his back under his pajama T-shirt. His shoulder blades and scalp felt a little sore, but he got up and ran to the bathroom to see if he could breathe fire or make little things float! Or maybe even both!

Then he saw himself in the mirror. He had antennae on his head, barely vissible in his wild, green, curly hair, and when he took off his PJ T-shirt- he had wings… Not like a bird with feathers, or as colourful as butterfly wings, they were a little diffrent but,… he had wings! His quirk had actually came in!!!

He ran out of the bathroom calling for his mother, “Mommy! Mommy! Guess what! My quirk came in!“ and his mother quickly ran out of her room with her hair half brushed, comb in hand. “Oh my- sweetie that’s amazi-“ The woman froze when she saw him, Izuku ran up to her with a wide smile and grabbed her skirt. “Look mommy, look! I have wings! I have a quirk mommy!“

His mother didn’t say anything for a long while and then just told Izuku to get dressed and that they’re going to the doctor.

At the doctor’s office, Inko explained to the doctor what her and her husband’s quirks were, and that she didn’t understand where Izuku’s quirk came from. They were told by the doctor that Izuku, might’ve gotten an gene from a distant or and old relative that resulted in him growing a pair of -presumably- moth wings, but Inko didn’t know anyone with that kind of quirk.

She was told to take him to a quirk specialist to get his information updated and to find out more about Izuku’s quirk.

Two days after Izuku’s quirk had come in, his father came back from a buisness trip. As soon as Izuku heard his father’s voice in the living room he sprung out of his room. “Daddy! Daddy my quirk came in! Before his mother could interrupt, his father smiled “Really? That’s wonderful Izuku! What is it? Can you breathe fire like your dad?“

Izuku shook his head “No, but I have wings daddy! Doctor said they’re probably moth wings! And antenne!“ His father’s smile faded immediatly.

He looked at his mom “What?“ and the air in the room changed and heavy silence rung through the appartment. “...That’s not my child is it?“ The man questioned. “What?- No- of course he is-„ slap.

“Don’t fucking lie to me! You cheated on me and thought I’d never find out didn’t you?! That I’d raise it and never notice!“ His father screamed “You fucking whore.“ Izuku ran to his mothers side “Mommy!“ and his father kicked him in his stomach „Don’t fucking talk you little shit!“ he scoffed.

“I’m fucking done, you’ll never see me again you slut!“ And with that Midoriya Hisashi walked out the door, holding only the suitcase he came back with. That was the last time Izuku saw his father.

His mother never was the same after that.

From that day on, she started forcing him to bind his wings with bandages to hide them, and she used hair pins to hide his antennne in his hair. It was painful, the bandages were so tight, and the hairpins pulled his hair.

When he asked why does he have to hide them, when the other kids don’t, she answered. “Because you’re not normal Izuku. You’re a freak of nature. If anyone found out what your quirk is, you’d get bullied, everyone would look down on you. No one can know and you’ll be safe“ Izuku looked up at her “But-“ she cut him off coldly. “You’ll tell everyone you’re quirkless, Izuku

Izuku just nodded, his mom just wanted to keep him safe, she was right.

Izuku felt the rest of the bandage on his shoulder slightly stick to his skin. When Bakugo let go, Izuku immidietly recognized the smell of burned fabric and nitroglicerin, it almost made him dizzy.

Bakugo’s lackeys laughed -probably at Izuku’s expression- from the doorway, while Bakugo threw his bag over his shoulder and started walking away, but just a step from thr doorway he looked over his shoulder with a shit-eating grin.

“Though…if you really wanna be a hero that bad, there might actually be another way. Just pray you’ll be born with a quirk in your next life… and take a swan dive off the roof of a building.“

Izuku suddenly straightened, and with angry and yet fearful expression he met Bakugo’s eyes. At wich, Bakugo just smirked and popped a few small explosions as a threat. That immediatly sent Izuku back to reality and he took a sharp breath. Meanwhile bakugo just turned around and walked away.

Izuku just stood there… and wanted to cry.

Nobody knew that he did have a quirk, they couldn't know, that's just how it was and always had been, so why did sound it so hard to hear?
