a reunion 585 years overdue, my dear.

Summary:

585 years. That's how long it had been since the war of Oakhurst waged. 585 years since Scott had lost someone who loved him unconditionally. 585 years since Scott lost someone who reminded him so much of a past lover.

585 years since he had murdered the people who had taken Avid away.

The year was 2025, and Scott was learning to live without attachments again. Something he thought he'd already mastered. That all stopped when during an outing with a dear friend and fledgling of his hear a laugh that makes Scott freeze.
--
Was originally an Oakhurst lost AU, but with episode 8 coming out, I decided to make it canon compliant with a few changes.

Notes:

Thank you to Ponyboy on tiktok for inspiring me to write this :) i was absolutely destroyed seeing both Scott and Avid's povs of episode seven, and apparently eVERYONE IN THIS FUCKING FANDOM IS ALLERGIC TO DOING ANYTHING NICE AND WRITING A COMFORTING FIC so i took it into my own hands to do!

pyro, owen, if you see this, its on sight, gamers(with love)

Chapter 1: Prologue

Chapter Text

Scott’s methods were.. Crude to say the least. He wasn’t exactly proud of what he had done, but he knew it had to be done. Why did they get to live on, to go home, when that was all Avid ever wanted?

Why did they get to live his dream, consequence free?

Those thoughts were what led Scott into town one early morning. The smell of burning wood was still fresh throughout Oakhurst, the remnants of the wall, the one that Avid had been so excited to burn.. Scott wandered into the middle of town, waiting. He stood outside the building protecting the Town Beacon. Turning it wasn’t his intention.

Slowly, one by one, the townsfolk began to wake. Lights flickered on from within homes, and Scott waited.

He simply waited as the humans gathered around him, silver swords in hand, ready to kill him mercilessly.

Exactly how Avid died. Mercilessly.

“If I wanted to do harm, I would’ve done so already.” Scott mused, his tone flat. He was not in the mood for small talk at the moment. No, he was here for help, as much as he hated to admit it.

Scott knew he was strong, but he knew he could not kill Owen on his own. Pyro, perhaps, but not Owen.

“You all want vampires dead, I understand.” Scott continued, his deep red eyes scanning the crowd for their leader, Martyn. “But it seems that some of our desires are overlapping at the moment.”

Abolish made his way towards Scott, standing in front of him with his sword ready.

“I think we’re long past talking.” The human simply said.

“I think not.” Scott eyed the silver sword Abolish held. “I want to offer you all.. My help. You see, Owen and my.. Dear fledgling have done me wrong. They no longer belong to my coven, and I do not want them to leave Oakhurst. Not after what they have done.”

At that, Abolish hesitated. Scott and his coven were a close knit family, it was well known that they trusted each other and helped each other. But it seemed.. That their trust was breaking apart at the seams.

That could be useful for the future, so Abolish hesitantly tucked his sword into its sheath, motioning for the others to do the same.

“What exactly did they do?” Abolish narrowed his eyes in suspicion. Scott glared back.

“They have taken something from me, something quite dear to me.” The elder vampire closed his eyes for a moment, taking in a breath that he didn’t need. “You want us all dead, I simply am offering to help your endeavors. I no longer care for their numbers, they have shown me that while their loyalties may not lie with you, they certainly do not lie with the coven.”

Abolish turned to his fellow townsfolk, his mind reeling. He had no idea what those two could have done to anger Scott in such a way. The elder vampire was usually so well composed, not laying his cards bare for all to see as he was doing now. While he looked calm, Abolish could see right through it. He understood the anger Scott hid.

Though Abolish did not value Scott as a human, he understood the mortal anguish behind the eyes of the predator.

“Legs,” He called to the Doctor, who stepped forward with a weary expression. “Go get Martyn, tell him it's important. Extremely important.”

__

Within the next few hours, Scott was invited into one of their homes, though with the compromise of silver surrounding it at all times with at least three of the townsfolk with him. He did not mind this, he had no intention to harm any of the humans.. Not now, at least.

They spoke quietly, the plan forming almost too easily. The way Abolish, Scott, and Martyn planned as if they had been working together all this time was uncanny. Scott was to lure Pyro and Owen into town under the guise of it being left unprotected, wanting to desecrate the Beacon within while it was abandoned. Martyn, Abolish, and a few others would be waiting underground to place silver all around the Beacon to trap the three vampires inside, before storming in and aiding Scott in their demise.

Apo was even recruited to keep lookout for any other vampires considering their unique connections to one another, to stall them if need be. They did not need to know what went down there. While she did not like the idea of working with Scott of all people, the compromise of two dead vampires was enough to make her hesitantly agree. The rest of the townsfolk were to leave town and begin purifying a Beacon far from the town, making it harder for any of the vampires to run to town if they were somehow alerted of what went down.

In Scott’s opinion, there was little room for error with their plan, and he hated to admit that it was rather nice being on.. Neutral terms with the humans for once. There was a mutual agreement between them that once Pyro and Owen were dead, Scott would walk free. They did not want to take a dirty win, the humans wanted to win fairly, to make it all the more satisfying for them.

So, with their plan made, Scott left, the words of his rescinded invite into their homes fresh in his mind. That was fine, he hadn’t expected them to make a mistake like leaving an open invite. He transformed, flying quietly through the daylight back to the comfort of his castle. The flight felt almost empty without the trees all around Oakhurst.

He was slowly becoming used to the feeling of emptiness. It wasn’t a feeling he enjoyed.

Chapter 2: The fledgling and the angered

Summary:

can you tell im not good with fighting scenes? and can you tell who im more mad at for avids death? yeah,,,

Chapter Text

Pyro hadn’t noticed Scott’s change in attitude towards him. The elder vampire, his sire, had never been a ‘warm’ person, never laying his emotions out for others to see. To him, Scott’s silence was nothing new.

Owen noticed right away. That wasn’t to say he cared, but he did notice. He remembered the way Scott had almost immediately forgiven Avid when the man kept complimenting him, bringing him holy water. Owen wasn’t as easily won over. He noticed the way Scott’s eyes would wander around the meeting room when all the vampires would get together, searching for Avid momentarily, before his eyes filled with a resigned grief.

He didn’t understand why Scott had cared. Avid was a liability from the start, and him dying to the humans only proved that further, leaving him open and vulnerable. Owen was merciful in killing that man, that poor excuse of a vampire. If it hadn’t been him and Pyro, it would’ve been the humans, not long after.

That’s why it surprised him when after Drift told the others that the town was empty, Scott jumped at the opportunity, even inviting Pyro and him to come help him take the Beacon. Pyro, of course, was equally as excited to help, to do something to gain the approval of his sire.

“The rest of you should stay here,” Scott said. “This very well may be a trap.” The elder vampire’s eyes wandered to Owen and Pyro, before looking around at the rest of the vampires once more. “If that’s the case, you all should be ready to defend the castle, but I trust that Pyro and Owen can hold their own in case we are the ones walking into a trap.”

The vampires murmured amongst themselves for a moment, but all ultimately agreed. Scott was the elder, and sire of most in the room, so they trusted his judgement.

When Pyro caught a glance of Scott smiling of all things, he believed it was because he was proud of how far they’d all come. And maybe part of it was. Maybe some part of him relished in the way they trusted him so easily, following him blindly.

So, the three vampires quickly made their way towards town. Scott encouraged the both of them to fly there, telling them it would be better the quicker they got there.

True to Drift’s words, the town looked deserted. It was odd, and Owen knew there was a good chance that it was a trap, but he knew that he and Scott were the two strongest vampires in Oakhurst, so he wasn’t worried.

Scott was the first to step into the tower containing the Beacon, beckoning the others inside after confirming there was no silver around. The three quietly hovered around the beacon, attempting to desecrate it quickly. None of them spoke, not the usual banter to fill the silence when turning a beacon. Scott stared at the beacon, and took a deep breath. He looked up at the other two vampires with something like acceptance in his eyes.

“What you two did, I’m not sure it was the best course of action.” The elder vampire stated. “I’m starting to believe that you two may be more of a liability than.. He was.”

Pyro reacted first, eyes wide.

“Sire! You know that we had to, he was holding the coven back. I thought you were– I thought you would be happy that we got rid of a liability.” He said quickly, trying to explain himself. To please his sire, as always. Owen stayed quiet, knowing nothing he said would change how Scott felt.

“I’m not.” Scott replied, tone flat. “In fact, I was quite unhappy with your actions. I trusted the two of you, and you..” He trailed off, taking a deep breath. “The coven is meant to protect each other, at all costs. We should be united together, trying to kill the humans. Not killing each other.”

Pyro opened his mouth to reply, but quickly stopped when he felt the presence of silver around them. Owen seemed to notice too, straightening up and looking around. Pyro quickly tried to leave, to bail himself out first, but noticed the silver lined the walls and exits. Owen looked up towards the staircase, and noticed a block of silver just high enough up to not be noticeable.

The two looked to Scott for help, but Scott was now sitting on the beacon, his expression not one of concern like the other two. Instead, his expression was grim, his eyes focused on the two.

“You have forced my hand. The coven does not accept those who have no issue plunging a stake into the hearts of our own.”

Owen’s pointed ears drooped down, baring his teeth at the elder vampire.

“You planned this! I should’ve known there was something wrong when you wanted us here with you.” Owen hissed out. “But there’s two of us, and only one of you. Whatever trick you did to trap us in here, we’ll just kill you and break through the silver after.”

Owen looked at Pyro, who hesitantly allowed his claws to rip through his flesh over his fingers. The sound of flesh ripping only made Scott’s eyes narrow. Pyro’s hands, unbleeding, were uncanny.

“Sire, I don’t want to do this.” Pyro pleaded. “We can talk about this in the Castle.”

Scott stared at the two of them for a moment, before smiling.

“It’s cute that you thought I would take on the two of you alone.” He chuckled. “Please, I know better than that. I know which battles I cannot win.. Fortunately, this isn’t one of them.”

Silver flashed from every door, the townsfolk surrounding the building with their swords at the ready. Martyn and Abolish entered the tower fearlessly, going to stand beside Scott, who tilted his head innocently.

“All I ask is that I am the one to end them.” He told them, before waving his hand dismissively. With that, the town descended into chaos. Owen held his own fairly well, but with all of the townsfolk trying to kill him in such a secluded space, he had no room for error or to help Pyro.

Owen barely dodged a sword to his throat, hissing as he clawed at whoever was attacking him. Throughout all the chaos, he could barely tell who it was he was swinging his claws at. All he knew is that Scott set this up, worked with the humans, and they all wanted him and Pyro dead.

Owen leapt into the air, bringing his claws and fangs down onto one of the humans, knocking them to the ground and relishing in the sound of the screams as he ripped through the skin of their throat. He barely registered as he was pulled off and the human was carried away, turning and scratching at whoever he could in the moment when he felt silver plunging into his side, pain searing through his body, his skin feeling like it was melting. Looking down, he saw a sword stabbed into the side of his stomach, which he grabbed and threw it to the side, his hand burning with an aching sensation.

Suddenly, his body froze as if locked in place, and sparing a glance at Pyro, who had been fighting off at least three people, was also frozen. Owen cursed under his breath.

Martyn’s little magic tricks were rather annoying, and lethal in such close capacity.

Owen noticed that Scott was also frozen, but he was still calmly sitting on the beacon, content to watch.

A sword came down on his arm, and he let out a scream of pure anguish. Moments later, he felt the invisible hold on his body let go, and he stumbled backwards, his mind racing to catch up with what happened, staring at the detached arm on the ground for just a few moments before someone else rushed towards him. He barely dodged a bottle of holy water being thrown at him moments before a sword swinging at him, which left him with a rather nasty gash in his side that he ignored in favor of his life.

Then, he heard it. Almost like a saving grace. Apo’s voice, of all things.

“The vampires are on their way!” She yelled from outside, causing the humans to tense up. They knew, of course, that while they could take on two of them trapped in a small area, they would not be able to take down the entire coven.

Scott sighed, standing up.

“We’ll cut this short, then!” Scott grabbed Owen’s remaining arm, pulling him away from the human and shoving him against a wall. He held a wooden stake in his other hand, which he mercilessly stabbed into Owen’s throat, again and again. He knew that in of itself would not kill the vampire, he simply just wished to make the other suffer before his death.

Scott leaned in, his mouth inches from Owen’s ear.

“Say hi to Louis for me, won’t you?”

And with a humorless laugh, he plunged the stake into the heart of the vampire. The effect was almost instant, Owen’s eyes widening as he watched the stake plunge into his chest. Even after all these years, he sometimes still expected to see blood. Owen glanced back up at Scott.

“I’ll tell Avid you said hi, too.” He spat.

Scott growled, pushing Owen to the floor. He grabbed a silver sword that had been dropped, ignoring the way his hands felt like they were melting around the hilt, stabbing it into Owen over and over until someone physically pulled him away from the now lifeless vampire on the ground.

The person who pulled him away was Abolish, who just stared at him for a moment before shaking his head and pulling the sword from his burnt hands. Scott stared back, and they stood like that for a moment before Abolish finally looked towards Pyro, who was being held down by Martyn, Pearl, and Ren. Scott followed his gaze, his eyes narrowed, and walked over. Ren quietly handed him another wooden stake. Scott nodded.

He kneeled down in front of Pyro, hissing.

“This could have been avoided if you hadn’t betrayed the coven, time and time again. I have been far too kind to you, it seems. You think you can get away with anything because you’re my fledgling, don’t you?” He scoffed.

“I feel nothing more than hatred towards you now. Who you are to me does not matter anymore.”

“S..Sire, please, I can do better–”

“You had your chance.”

Scott shoved the weapon into the heart of the beast before him, taking no joy in watching his red eyes lose what little life it had left. It was not that he felt remorse, but it was saddening to have to kill one of his own.

Then, he stood and turned to Abolish once more.

“Attack me,” he said. “If I leave with no wounds, the others will be suspicious.”

Abolish nodded, readying his sword. Scott simply shut his eyes, he hated the burning sensation of silver, but it was a necessary evil to get away with this.

A burning, all encompassing pain engulfed him as he felt a silver sword driven into his abdomen, and he let out a hiss of pain. Quickly, the others removed some of the silver surrounding the exits, and Scott ignored the burning pain as he ran from the building, finding the other vampires running towards the town, stopping when they saw him injured, and alone.

“Go,” He said quickly, his tone harsh. “Back to the Castle, now.”

“Scott!” Shelby ran over and wrapped an arm around his torso, wrapping one of his arms around her shoulders to support his weight. “Wh–What happened??? Where are the others? Are you okay?”

Scott shook his head as Shelby led him away from the town, some of the vampires accompanying him while some of the others disappeared, teleporting back to the Castle beacon under his orders. Drift stayed with him and Shelby, walking with them and watching to make sure that none of the humans were following.

“It was a trap.” Scott said, his eyes meeting Drift’s. Something in her expression told him she knew what had really happened, but neither said anything about it. They both missed Avid. “As soon as we got to the beacon, they lined silver across every exit. The other two didn’t make it out.”

Chapter Text

“These flowers look fake,” Scott mused, grabbing his phone from his pocket in his hoodie to check how much money he had. He glanced over at Shelby, who looked at the flowers and squinted.

“Yeah, humans kinda just make them these days.”

“That’s so weird. I miss when flowers grew naturally. The way Earth intended them to grow.” Scott scoffed, “Avid deserves better than fake flowers.”

“You could grow your own?” She suggested, “Hey, can we get some food while we’re out too? Drift was talking about inviting some friends over, so I wanted to get something to make.”

Scott nodded idly, wincing at his phone. Yeah, he really needed more money, the economy had gone disgustingly horrible in the last hundred or so years, he noticed. But he did have enough to buy the bouquet he was looking at, which was enough for him.

“Yeah, you can go grab some stuff, but you’re paying for it, because I have like, barely twenty in my account right now. Also, I don’t have time to grow flowers.”

“We’re immortal, Scott.”

“Unimportant.”

Shelby giggled and walked off, no doubt grabbing something to make dinner with for some of Drift’s little human friends. Scott knew better than to truly get attached to humans, especially those who wanted to die someday or wouldn’t like the supernatural. He knew better to get attached to most vampires, too, after what had happened to.. Avid. The coven was an exception. He was their sire, and he felt weirdly paternal towards them. They’d chosen to stay with him even after they’d escaped Oakhurst.

Well, all but Apo, who had moved in with her partner instead, but they stayed in contact.

Shelby and Drift also accompanied Scott back to Oakhurst every year to do a little housekeeping around the castle and catch up with Pearl and Cleo, while Scott replaced the flowers at Avid’s grave. The others would sometimes tag along, but it was rarer nowadays since most had adapted to this ‘modern’ life and had other things to do.

Abolish, a few years after they’d all escaped, had formed a bond with the survivors and reluctantly asked to be turned. He knew that while he would not be able to be cured a second time, he could still be put down if it came to it. When the others asked why he had finally accepted vampirism, he excused it as a way to continue keeping watch over Scott. The others barely bought it, but said nothing either way.

Scott blinked, turning away from the thoughts of the past and walked over to a self checkout area, buying the bouquet and waiting for Shelby near the door. She usually tended to get distracted, mostly because people of this age were especially obsessed with their ‘aesthetic’ that came with their snow white hair and red eyes. Apparently, it was a big hit among the youth of the generation, and they made it known. Teenagers and young adults would often compliment his hair, his eyes, and his overall appearance. Not that he minded, of course, flattery still worked like a charm on him.

When the coven would go out in groups bigger than two, people would get even more excited, even asking for photos or just asking where they got their ‘contacts’ and who did their hair. It was kind of cute, but hard to make up excuses for. Everyone assumed they were performative, or just a really cheerful group of goths.

When Shelby finally arrived, she was carrying multiple bags full of food, which he simply rolled his eyes at and took from her. Not that she needed the help as a vampire with enhanced strength, but because he was still getting used to this whole ‘changed person’ thing, and that also apparently meant doing things for people without them asking and without expecting a reward. Tiring, but manageable, he supposed.

“Did you also make sure to get food for us?” Scott asked, eyebrow raised. Shelby nodded quickly, pointing to a bag filled with raw meat, among other things.

“Of course! I just hope Drift told these humans about us, or it’s gonna be really awkward explaining why we eat raw meat.” Shelby chuckled. Scott sighed.

“Knowing her, she probably withheld the truth on purpose to make it funny when we do eat raw meat. She’s changed quite a bit since Oakhurst, and I’ve got to say that I definitely don’t hate it.”

“Oh, I know! Isn’t it awesome? Before, she was kind of just living with being a vampire, but now she’s, like, actually living like one! Except for, uh, murder and fear and stuff.”

“I know! She’s missing out on the best part!” Scott joked, chuckling. Shelby giggled along, nodding her head. The two headed out into the parking lot, Shelby grabbing keys out of Scott’s pockets and unlocking their car as they walked up to it.

To be fair, it probably wasn’t the most discreet choice to be driving a hearse everywhere, but Scott was nothing if not appreciative of a good opportunity when he saw one. It also didn’t help that they had a bat themed vanity license plate, but none of the coven really cared because it was funny.

Scott loaded the groceries into the back of the car while Shelby skipped happily into the passenger’s seat. He was about to get into the car when his ears perked up, hearing something he hadn’t heard in just under 600 years.

A laugh.

Shelby looked to Scott from inside the car, concerned as the man suddenly started looking around with a frantic expression.

Scott heard it again, a chuckle, followed by a sentence. A voice he had missed dearly.

“Is that a hearse? With a bat decoration on the plate? That screams vampire, I love it.”

“You would, wouldn’t you?” A female voice replied, the eye roll evident from just her voice alone. Scott was moving before he even realized, following the sound of the voices.

Before he knew it, he was just behind two people, a man with snow white hair and a woman with short brown hair.

The woman stopped and turned, her eyebrow raising as she took Scott’s appearance into account. Scott took the time to do the same. She wore a plain black t-shirt with grey sweatpants. Her left hand looked to be.. Tattooed? Black? Almost like a blackout sleeve like he’d seen some men have, but on her hand.

“Elle?” There it was again, that wonderful voice. “Why’d you stop?”

The man turned around, his face exactly the same as it looked the day Scott had lost him.

Chapter Text

The world didn’t stop as their eyes met, but time seemed to slow down as the man turned to face Scott, his expression unassuming. Because why now, after all these years, would they have met again? It was as if the world itself had quelled all noise, the silence almost worse than any noise, as their crimson eyes met for the first time in almost 600 years.

At first, the other’s gaze was unfamiliar, searching the man’s face for any kind of recognition.

It took a few moments, seconds that felt like another 600 years to Scott, for Avid’s eyes to flicker with emotion, recognition. Time went on, birds chirped as they flew through the air, engines roared in the distance, but to Scott, the world was silent, because Avid hadn’t spoken yet.

Tentatively, Avid reached his hand out.

Scott did the same, their hands meeting and fingers intertwining, as if both were making sure the other was real, not some sick joke their brain was making.

Scott blinked tears away from his eyes, realizing that this was truly Avid. That this was real.

“Scott..?” His voice saying Scott’s name after all this time almost made him shed a tear, but he blinked that back too. Scott was now very aware of how unkempt he looked that day. His eyes looked tired, his hoodie was far from presentable, a simple black hoodie that read ‘mother of too many’, which Drift and Shelby had bought for him and made him wear because it made them giggle.

“Well, you look different.” Scott managed to say, his eyes lingering on Avid’s. One blood red eye and the other the color of gold. The blackened skin on his hand and, now looking closer, barely concealed on the side of his face under his hair which was still pure white, just as Scott remembered it.

“I could say the same for you.” Avid choked out, his free hand covering his mouth in shock, shaking slightly.

The woman beside Avid seemed to realize something, her golden eyes widening as she stared between them.

“This is him? It’s– It’s actually him?” She asked, her tone full of disbelief. Scott’s cold, unbeating heart warmed at the idea that Avid had told his companion about him. That he’d made such an impact that even almost 600 years later, they both knew and remembered him.

Avid stepped forward and wrapped his arms around Scott suddenly, letting out a laugh that the elder vampire never thought he’d hear again. Joyful, giggly, and just as he remembered it. The elder didn’t immediately return the hug, his mind still full of static and confusion and relief, but managed to wrap his arms around the younger vampire’s waist, pulling him closer and burying his face against the man’s neck, taking in the scent of the other and committing it to memory– He’d forgotten it once, he wouldn’t do so again. Wouldn’t let time dwindle every memory away like it had done so before, taking away every little detail Scott tried his hardest to hold onto. Those little details that he’d sobbed when he realized he couldn’t recall, those little details that made his therapist give him that pitying look he hated when he talked about them.

The two held each other for what felt like hours, neither wanting to let the other go, not again. They’d made that mistake once, taking what they had for granted. They’d paid the price for it, and wouldn’t do so again. Not if Scott could help it.

He barely registered the footsteps running up behind him, the huff of annoyance, before the figure froze in their tracks.

“Avid?” Shelby’s voice said, slowly, tone full of shock and total disbelief.

Scott pulled his head back and glanced back at Shelby, before holding out one arm, inviting her into the hug. She immediately ran forward, wrapping her arms around her self-appointed sire and her fledgling.

Avid laughed in surprise, eyes widened.

“Shelby! You’re here too!” He exclaimed.

“Oh my gosh, it’s really you!” Shelby squealed, pulling the two vampires closer to her with excitement. “You– You’re alive?! Gosh, I have to call the others, oh my goodness, I–” Shelby sputtered out, not able to collect her thoughts enough to finish the sentence or even start a new one.

Avid’s expression changed hearing ‘others,’ but Scott scoffed immediately.

“Those two are long gone. They won’t be making any reappearing acts like you did, dear.” Scott informed him. Avid’s face flushed slightly both at the nickname and the fact that Scott could read his expressions so easily even after 600 years.

He didn’t know Scott laid awake at night committing every detail of his eyes, his smile, his laugh, to memory before it could be taken from him by the passage of time. Didn’t know that Scott had cried when he couldn’t remember the way Avid’s eyes lit up when he was excited, didn’t know how much money he’d spent making others draw Avid purely off description before ripping the paper to shreds when they’d gotten a detail wrong.

“Scott made quick work of them.” Shelby rolled her eyes, glistening with tears. “Teamed up with the humans because he was so upset.” She told Avid, who looked delighted and flattered.

“You put up with the humans for me?” Avid asked with a grin, his tone full of expectancy and a hint of excitement. It was no secret that back all those years ago, Scott wanted nothing to do with the humans, just wanted to kill them and be done with it, get out of Oakhurst and be gone, allowing the vampires to roam free.

“I’d do it again if I had known it would mean I’d see you again, a million times.” Scott smiled warmly.
