Summary
He slid one arm carefully behind her shoulders and the other beneath her knees, terrified of hurting something he couldn’t see. She felt too light. Too loose. Her body didn’t brace the way it should have.
When he lifted her, she made a small sound, thin, involuntary, somewhere between pain and panic.
“Sorry, sorry,” he said immediately, heart lurching. “I’ve got you.”
His own breathing was uneven now. He hated that she could probably feel it. He wanted to be calm for her. Instead, adrenaline kept crashing through him in waves, making his jaw clench, making his hands shake under her weight.
She grabbed weakly at the front of his hoodie, fingers bunching fabric against his chest. That nearly undid him.
“It’s okay,” he said again, softer now, though the words felt useless. “You’re okay. I’ve got you.”
