The invitation had come as a surprise, most of all due to its nature. Vulnerability, or the pretense of it, softened the edges of Arno's handsome face, deepened the warmth of his gaze. Hidden beneath an overhang, shrouded by the darkness of an empty alley that reeked of dried blood and burnt wood, Arno was responding at last to his unspoken advances, and with it came a price Napoléon would have refused to pay if he believed there would be other occasions.
Now, standing at the threshold of a stuffy bedroom with his arms folded behind his back, he almost regretted it. Almost.
