He’d committed atrocities against humanity, there was no denying that…and yet, for whatever bizarre, perhaps sick reason, she didn’t think he was evil. She wanted to, it would be easy and totally justified, and yet…
“Why is it…” Lawrence said softly, gazing at her a little bemusedly, “…that I always end up with the perspective Handmaids? Is...is there a sign or something hanging off my front door?”
“Perhaps it's your own special punishment, sir”.

As if the whole ordeal with faking his signature wasn’t enough, she just kept being rude. He wanted to show her that she was still his wife and wives had to obey their husbands. She was his.

Summary
The relationship between Fred and Serena is interesting to me. They had a great, passionate love as evidenced by the flashbacks, and somehow, when Gilead came to be, their love became illegal--sex was solely for procreation, and since Serena had never gotten pregnant, the assumption was that she was barren. The demise of their relationship is a central theme of the first few seasons.
The other thing that fascinates me is Serena's extreme desire to become a mother--at any cost. And we do see her going through absolutely any lengths to secure herself a baby--selling off pieces of her soul at the same time.
These are just a few chapters that I was inspired to write when I read the pilot script of The Handmaid's Tale. There is some cannon included, but it's mostly off script.
