Cassie Stone has suffered her fair share of tragedies, five and a half years ago Cassie's older brother, sister and nephew went on a plane and were assumed dead. Her brother's wife fell apart but Cassie was there to watch her niece in the process.
Now her brother, sister and nephew are back and exactly the same. Although Cassie is nothing like the irresponsible younger sister they knew before.
On top of that, she meets MJ, a confused teenager who just needs someone to look out for her. Cassie sees herself in MJ and promises to make sure she’s safe.

Her eyes, half-turned away from him and pointed at the wall across from their bed, had that distant look in them, as far as he could see. Not the one that meant determination and focus, the one he sometimes teased her for. No, this one was different — harder, and yet more tender. Nuances, really.
He was still learning to read them all.
"Can’t help you if you don’t talk to me," he said, though he was fine with the silence, too, if that was what she needed. "Can’t read all of your mind yet," he added with a wink.
