After Gadreel kills Kevin, Dean and Cas track him down, and, with Crowley's help, get Sam to expel Gadreel from his body. But Sam was vessel to Metatron's Second in Command, and, therefore, has seen and heard vital information regarding the Scribe of God's plans. Unwilling to leave such information in the hands of someone as resourceful, and skilled as Sam Winchester, Metatron sets out to ensure that what Sam learned as a vessel, remains out of the hands of his enemies.
