Something pale watched him from the corner, high up on the ceiling, gauzy like smoke. It glowered down, down, down at him, awaiting his next move. One wrong step would surely be his last. When he fled downstairs, he silently pleaded for his heart to stop pounding. Lest it burst right out of him.
His bedroom was haunted, he announced. Chuck's eyes were weary in the lamp light. His smile was, too. A surge of betrayal broiled up in Jimmy's throat, sudden and stinging - his brother didn't believe him. And yet, soon enough, a cool wave of reassurance would douse it back down. 'Cause his brother was always right.

Summary
A modern day college (n' sometimes high school) AU, set in The Sunflower State. It's about growing up, friends & family, trauma & healing, and all those other Mother themes we know n' love. Exploring how these characters might mature as people and process real world problems, if freed from the constraints of Nintendo RPGs with cataclysmic stakes. Expect grounded non-magical spins on events from the games, some variety in presentation & tone between fics, and a whole lotta fast food. Named for that one fic, the first one. And how getting back into my favorite game series threw me into an extended creative intermission the way Kumatora throws a punch - which is to say kinda clumsily but with great exuberance.
These fics are all written to work as standalone pieces, and can be read in any order. If you start on a later entry, or if you only read one or some of 'em, you won't be missing any crucial context. I just like to keep 'em all organized in the same thrift store bargain bin. 🌻

They’d planned it this way, going on a Tuesday afternoon when most people are stuck at their offices or classrooms or wherever the hell else normies spend their time. Headstones cast shadows over the climate-burnt grass, and little specks of dust keep getting stuck in Pete’s eyelashes, making him wipe his eyes and curse under his breath. It’s small, but it’s enough to coax a smile from Badger. He’ll take any distraction available to him to pretend he isn’t sitting at the grave of a friend. To pretend that their group hadn’t dwindled from four men to two in just as many years.
