Ichigo can tell in that moment that Kisuke is going to make that article happen if he has to write it himself, and he wants to groan in frustration and disgust, but there’s a smile tugging at his lips. “Fuck off,” he says after a beat. Can’t have Kisuke thinking his idea is acceptable.

Summary
It doesn’t take long for word of an unknown Shiba to reach the ears of Seireitei. Rumours float on the wind, spreading faster than pollen, and soon there’s not a person left that isn’t talking about it. The gossip only erupts louder when Shiba-fukutaichou takes a week off to hunt the man down, determined to bring home his long-lost family member and take him in. If it were any other family, perhaps the poor man would have been left to rot in the higher districts where Kisuke heard he was last, but he this man is allegedly a Shiba, and the Shiba clan would not leave one of their own to rot.

“I volunteer for the mission,” Kisuke says before he can think it through further. Because if he’s right, if this is who he thinks it is, then he wants nothing more than to go to Hueco Mundo this instant. His mind is a litany of Ichigo Ichigo Ichigo even when he knows logically that it’s not the best decision to make to avoid suspicion.
“As captain of the research department, your expertise will be invaluable, Urahara-taichou,” Yamamoto approves. “Any other volunteers?”
“Ah hell, I ain’t seen any action fer a while. I’ll go,” Shinji pipes up.
It’s amusing to think that maybe the Soul King is watching over him right now because this is the best-case scenario for him. If this is Ichigo, and it’s entirely probably that it is because his lover isn’t someone to be taken lightly, Shinji is the easiest one to convince to give him some leeway. From the sounds of things, Ichigo is completely hollow right now, and that means this is going to be rough. But he’ll do it because he loves Ichigo and he’ll do anything for him.
