    Summary

Shane Hollander only meant to attend a few hockey games — a small act of rebellion against the boyfriend who controlled every part of his life. But that night changes everything. The arena becomes a refuge, Rose becomes a friend, and the Montreal Metros become the first place he’s felt safe in years.

No one knows he’s living with domestic violence.
No one knows he’s planning to run.
No one knows how much he’s breaking.

And no one expects him to fall for Ilya Rozanov — the loud, brilliant, closeted Russian winger recently traded under suspicious circumstances.

Ilya has secrets he can’t share, a past he can’t escape, and feelings he doesn’t know how to handle.

Shane is learning how to live again.
Ilya is learning how to feel again.
Both are learning how to trust.

But when the truth about their pasts threatens to surface, they’ll have to decide whether they can face it together — or lose each other trying.

Or: A story about healing, found family, and the terrifying, beautiful risk of choosing love after surviving what was meant to break you.

    Summary

“I was thinking about the honeymoon phase thing.”
    “Yes?” Ilya said.
“I think it’s different for us. I don’t want us to be all blissful and then only start fighting when we’re back to barely seeing each other. I think it’s good if we figure things out now, when we have the time. Whatever needs figuring out. So we have a solid foundation going into the season. Sort of like training camp.”
“So this means you will keep getting mad at me for things,” Ilya said.
Shane smiled, rolled his eyes. “Yeah, exactly,” he said.
“Good, I find it very hot,” Ilya said, and kissed him.

    An insecure over-thinker and a self-destructive thrill-seeker walk into a relationship.

    Summary

Ilya starts calling Shane boring regularly after that, not cruelly but persistently, the way you press a bruise you know is there just to confirm it still hurts. Shane's cereal is boring, Shane's training schedule is boring, Shane's shoes lined up by the door are boring, and Shane responds with variations of "fuck off" and "you're an asshole" that become increasingly creative and occasionally surprising. They do not talk about anything that matters. They talk about groceries and whose turn it is to take out the trash and whether Ilya's music is too loud at midnight, which it is.

On the ice, Shane is someone else entirely. Ilya watches him from the upper stands every morning with vending machine coffee going cold in his hand and doesn't tell anyone.

Or: Shane asked Ilya once how you know when it's the right person. Ilya described Shane to him, and Shane didn't recognise himself.

    Summary

Ilya's heart shouldn’t be pounding at the prospect of having Shane in his arms once again. And yet, it was.

When Ilya exited the club, he saw Shane inside a sensible car—a blue Jeep. Seconds later, the car was skirting off the gravel road. Ilya tried his best not to be disappointed, or hurt, but managed neither.

(Or Alt. post-club scene from Ilya's POV. He finds Shane's car pulled on the side of the road. They talk.)
