A sound to his right, and all thoughts of recreating Spider-Woman’s webbing leaves his mind. The girl who’d caught his eye in the hallway sits next to him. She’s more beautiful up close, blue eyes striking, movement graceful. She nods to him disinterestedly as she takes a seat.
She’s going to be his lab partner if she doesn’t move. Suddenly, nothing has ever been more important to Miles than convincing her to stay right here until the professor solidifies the partnership for the semester.
“Hey,” he says in a voice Uncle Aaron would’ve been proud of.

“Don’t do this,” Gwen warns him. His guileless expression might fool someone who doesn’t know him like her. She’s been on the receiving end of his taunts enough to know the kind of person he is.
His smile falters and he leans back. “Do…do what?”
“Listen, Morales,” she whispers angrily at him. Best not to draw attention from the rest of the club. “You want to sluff off, show up late all the time, and take little shots at me, fine. It’s what we do, I’m used to it. But don’t go playing games.”
His jaw drops and eyebrows raise. “Oh. You hate me, hate me.”
More games. “What?”
“Sorry, I thought we had this, like,” he bobs his head looking for the right words, “Playful, joking, flirty banter going on here. I totally misread the situation.”

“It?” Tandy asks. She turns her head to look at him. He turns his. She’s so close. His eyes drop to her lips before he forces them back up.
“You and me.”
She swallows. “You were with Evita. And I like Evita,” she says, not really answering him. “And…and we’ve kind of had a lot going on.”
“I’ve thought about us,” Tyrone says brazenly. Her eyelids flicker in surprise. “I tried not to. Especially once I started seriously dating Evita. And I did a pretty good job. But…I mean. They called us a divine pairing. How…how could I not think…”

“Guys!” Spider-Woman shouts, interrupting them. “Can you answer Morales’ question? Is there another way?”
Peter takes a breath, and shakes his head. “We’ve been trying—and we’ll keep trying. But this is our best bet. At the very least it might buy us time to find a solution. So,” he says with a raise of his eyebrows. “Miles Morales? Meet Gwen Stacy. Gwen Stacy—Miles Morales.”
There’s no proper way to describe the tension as the two face one another. It’s thick and anxious and Miles is surprised one of them hasn’t run from the room to escape it. He tries to smile, but he’s sure it looks more like a grimace. How can it not, with the news they’ve just gotten? But he’s a realist. The situation is what it is, and Miles can’t think of anything they have to lose. So the first time he says his future wife’s name, it’s in a shitty proposal.
“Well Gwen Stacy, what do you say? Will you marry me?”

“Now isn’t the time,” she repeats, her gaze dipping to his lips.
“Totally agree,” he says, even as he lets his hand move up and down her side, over her hip, back to her ass so he can touch it again. It isn’t the time. Wasn’t he just berating himself for not having his priorities straight?
A pang of guilt comes and goes in an instant, as her hand dances up his arm to cup his face and soothes it away.
“Miles, we said we’d keep our hands to ourselves when we’re in the suits.” Her words tell him to stop, but the way her lips draw closer makes it hard for him to take those words seriously. She presses her lips to his.

Summary
Miles watches her finger trace the spider bite. She’s warm, soft, gentle. How he’d like to enjoy this moment with her skin on his, but all he feels is dread. What had bitten him? What had bitten her?
He turns her hand over and sees the telltale two pricks of a spider bite. The skin around it is already slightly puffed with swelling. He runs his thumb over it, soothingly.
His eyes lift to see Gwen doing the same. They’ve been catching eyes for months. This time is very different.
“So,” she starts, but clearly doesn’t know what to say. Miles thinks he does.
“Fuck.”
She contemplates his response for a moment before nodding.
“Fuck.”

The bell rings. Gwen sighs and drags her bag over her shoulder. Trudging through the wintery campus, she idly wonders if she can go home before her dinner with her dad. She’s pretty sure if she does, she’ll end up canceling on him. Again. Better to stay out and up and moving.
She checks her phone for any alerts that might require Spider-Woman. That usually distracts her well enough. While on her phone, she scrolls to a contact she scrolls to daily. Almost hourly. She wonders how he is, and her finger hovers over his name. She can’t Facetime him. Can’t call him. Maybe a text, though.

Miles finishes putting his suit on, and leans down to kiss her goodbye. “Like you even need to study.”She smiles at his praise. “If the test were on Multiversal Theory or pendulum motion, I think I’d do pretty well.”
Miles chuckles, and opens up a portal, high above his New York. “Bye, Gwen.”
Miles leaps through and falls to his city. Being with Gwen…it feels so much like a dream. When he’s with her, and hears the tenderness in her voice while they speak, and soaks in their familiarity, he can’t believe how real it all is.
Then he’ll be rudely reminded that it’s not real. Not quite.

“With what money?” she quirks an eyebrow. Right. It’s not like his credit card works here. Or that he even has money in his universe. “Just come to my place.”
He should tell her no. He should tell her he doesn’t think it’s a good idea. Even if she can handle spending hours with him late into the night, he’s not sure he can.

He shakes his head clear of the intrusive thoughts that he should not be thinking in this moment. In her company. He shouldn’t think them ever, really, but that’s just an unrealistic goal to set. “Just bandage it up, then?” he asks, voice only shaking a small amount.

It’s not that she dislikes Peter Parker or Spider-Man. In fact, back in her high school days in Queens, she rather admired the guy. Especially when she found out he was just a kid her age. She might have even had a little crush on him when he was outed as Spidey, and his silly school picture was broadcast to the whole world.
But he had continued superhero-ing and she had worked on her craft. And the fact that he could just barge in here with his name alone rubbed her the wrong way. Like an athlete who thought he could star in a movie because how hard could it be, right?
