“You keep bumping into me,” I feigned hurt, my hand on my chest as his eyebrow rose daringly, “you are the one bumping into me!” he made a tch sound, bumping my shoulder lightly as I bumped back against him, our shared laughter swirling around us. The next bump never came, his arm instead lazily resting on my shoulders, tucking me into his side as my arm automatically slid around his waist, “no danger of us getting injured this way,” he mused, I didn’t call him out on the obvious bullshit. For a minute I didn’t anyway, but I never had been good at restraint. “Or people might think you like me,” the words were out of my mouth before my brain had engaged properly to warn me against such a stupid comment and yet George chuckled quietly, “can’t ruin my reputation,” his arm remained comfortably on my shoulders, “and what a stellar reputation it is,” he chuckled again, the small shell being toyed with between his fingers.

And right there, in his desperate plea, was the absolute, terrifying core of why she had to stop it.
He was too willing to erase his own needs, to compromise his own emotional limitations, and shrink himself down into whatever shape she needed just to keep her comfortable. He adored her completely. He cherished the very ground she walked on and treated her with a level of devotion that she felt unworthy of.
