Daotok was unconventional. He was the opposite of your average alpha. He wasn't loud. He wasn't forceful. He wasn't outspoken. He stayed in the background in most situations; he would rather be at home alone than be forced into public settings. He acted like an omega - so that was how he was often viewed. He never expected the tattooed doctor next door to be far more like him than he realized. Nor did he anticipate searching for a soul would open for him a world he'd long since thought was closed. But he wasn't the only unconventional person in the world - or even on his floor...

Summary
The early days of med school ran together. Blended into endless information and mind-numbing lectures. Tonfah, Hill understood. They came from similar backgrounds, had similar motivations. Johan was less transparent. He had no real motivation to study medicine, seemed to do so to prove something rather than obtain any skill in the field. Then there was Arthit - a puzzle box Hill had yet to crack.
A section on cancer unlocks a small piece of the Arthit puzzle, and Hill stores it with the other facts he's collected about his friends. Puts it with Johan's North in the back of his mind, ready to recall it when the time comes.

'It was a silly thing really. Strange that humans could be sidelined over something as small as a virus or a bacteria. When he was little, Joke used to envision those microscopic organisms like tiny monsters that would set up a camp in the back of his throat – lighting fires and building houses – whenever he was sick. Why else would his throat feel so raw and agitated? Why would his nose run if not for the small monsters with their small water hoses clearing the area for their small houses? Plus, if viruses and bacteria were monsters, then his father was a superhero fighting against them.'
