Summary
Derek reads the text fondly, something warm curling in his being, or whatever’s left of it. Despite how little they got to talk in person, Derek remembers everything he learned about Avery. To say he knew him better than he knew himself would be accurate. Derek isn’t sure what’s going on with him in that moment— or more accurately, some part of him knows what’s going on with him in that moment, his mind is currently just too weary to grasp the infinity of it all— but he knows Avery. Avery is familiar.
Avery makes it a little easier to not get lost in his own, untethered head.
d3rLord3: It’s me.
d3rLord3: You found me again. You’re becoming an expert at that.
(Or Avery manages to recover something, or rather someone, from the wreckage of that world. Derek becomes a ghost in the machine and finds he doesn’t mind it.)

Summary
When Shanks had his crew dock in a sleepy little village in the East Blue, he had intended for it to only be a short stop before venturing on to fulfil his Captain's last request. He had intended to get supplies, get drunk, and leave again, staying no longer than a day.
He had not intended on staying for a year.
He certainly had not intended on gaining a son.
Or: a selection of moments throughout Shanks' stay at Dawn Island which highlighted the unwitting bond between himself and his beloved Anchor.

Summary
Freed from the man's ministrations, Luffy finally got to answer, "They wanted to kidnap me. Lotsa people do."
Oh, he could believe that, alright.
If he could, Shanks too would sweep that adorable little baby onto the Red Force and take him away foreve-
He pressed his nails into his palm as hard as he could to escape the haze that had once again fallen into his mind. Benn hummed while he absentmindedly patted the boy on his head. "And do you know why?"
Luffy's eyebrows knotted together in concentration. He kept silent like this for almost a minute before his expression brightened up again. "Nope!"
Shanks gave the child a sappy smile and nodded sagely. "Of course, you wouldn't know what went through the head of those stinky barbarians." Privately he wondered if another smile like that would be enough to kill him.
Luffy laughed brightly. "You're weird."
Seems like he'd find out sooner than later.

Luffy lets out one last breath. His hand slips from Ace’s face. His head falls back limply, a small smile on his face.
And something in Ace shatters.

A smile spreads across Luffy’s face, and it’s almost unnatural with how wide it is. Ace has seen Luffy smile a million times, but- none have looked like this.
And- against Ace’s wildest hopes-
Luffy’s eyes shoot open.
