    Grace is unprepared for the level of love that all of Erid seemed to have for him. It was vaguely terrifying, but also.... nice? To be cared for. To be wanted.

    It gets worse when they find out the circumstances of him ending up on the Hail Mary.

    When his declining health necessitates a trip back to Earth, he is faced with a planet that loves him so fiercely and wonderfully that it finally starts to break through his crippling lack of self worth and bloom into something incredible.

    And Earth? Earth has to deal with an Erid that is polite, protective, and most of all, pissed.

    The Hail Mary has been shot out into the depths of the infinite void of space to search for an answer that may not even be there. Aboard, the three crew members lay in stasis as the ship hurtles like an arrow towards a distant star, with no hope of return, but a desperate hope to make things right.

    At home, two brothers are left in sudden and violent grief. A woman grapples with whether or not she made the right decision. The world strains and suffers under the weight of the coming Fimbulwinter.

    There’s a hitch of breath on the other end before Colt manages to speak.

    “I know you only said to contact you when there’s an emergency, but I think this really, really counts for one, man... there was an explosion near the site where Ryland was working. It happened yesterday. It’s all over the news. I came to his apartment and it’s… Court, it’s wiped. Everything’s gone. I’ve been trying to call him, but he’s unreachable.

    I have a really, really bad feeling. I didn’t know what to do.”

    Ryland Grace, youngest sibling of Colton and Courtland Gentry Grace, has gone MIA after a lab explosion. His older brother finds out.

    If this were a movie scene she would be screaming or crying right now. She can see it so clearly: it would be so loud, it would catch the leading man’s attention, never mind how loud the music outside was, and he’d come running to save her. He’d break down the door and beat the guy up before carrying her out to safety. Happy ending, move onto the next scene.

    Or if it were a darker sort of movie…

    Jody’s body goes cold. She doesn’t want that kind of ending.

     

    Jody is supposed to be having a fun night out with Colt and the rest of her crew. When one man can't accept rejection, it all goes horribly wrong.

    It had been a long and difficult 27 years since the Hail Mary had launched. Not as terrible as it could have been, but not easy. Humanity had survived and adapted, as it always did. There had been terrible wars. There had been incredible acts of kindness. There had been massive scientific breakthroughs. And now, there were two distant blips of Petrova-light, picked up by the Deep Space Network, hurtling home. Two probes, braking hard as they hurtled toward Earth holding the secrets to its salvation. They were late, or at least, not very early, but they were here.

    Grace may have made his peace with dying to save Rocky, but Rocky insists they return to Earth.
