A strange and uneasy silence falls heavy on those close by in a real-life record scratch moment. Foxes exchange furtive glances between each other, stopped in their tracks in whatever stretch they were in, which Neil can’t help but notice when the easy murmurs of conversations closest to him stop.Or: 4 times Nicky pesters Neil about his sexuality, and one time Neil opens up on the subject to Andrew.
Kind of a 5+1 thing, but I got lazy so you get 4+1.

“You said it’s shit.”
“I did.” Andrew agrees.
“You said it isn’t a permanent fix.”
“It’s not.”
Andrew reaches through the window, plucks the tree shaped air freshener off the rearview mirror, holds it to his nose. Neil waits, knows that it lost its scent months ago. He isn’t sure why he’s held on to it, just knows he likes the look of it dangling while he drives. It’s another identifiable feature to his car, another way to know Neil Josten drove this Subaru.
His mother would have hit him before throwing it away.
Andrew places the scentless piece of cardboard back in its spot with a delicacy that indicates understanding. A gentleness that makes Neil wonder if Andrew Minyard, with his family and his fancy sports car and his leather jacket, is also learning how to be a real person.
“I can fix it.” Andrew says, and for the first time since he came upon Neil and his unresponsive engine, he looks away.
“You can fix it,” Neil echoes, a question and a statement in one.
“Yes.” Andrew replies.

“Christ, Kevin, would you just calm down?” she said, exasperated. “I mean, God, do you have a crush on him or something?”
She did not expect Kevin to stare back at her, again, as if she were an idiot.
“What?” she demanded.
Kevin visibly hesitated. “They didn’t tell you?” he asked dubiously.
“Tell me what? That you’re a bloody psycho?”
Kevin stared at her some more. He flicked his gaze over her shoulder, to where she knew Andrew and Neil still were. When he looked at her again, a flush had begun to crawl up his neck. He cleared his throat. His lips parted on words that would not come.
She stared back at him. “Oh my god, have you actually got a crush on Andrew?”
