The Bucky Barnes he had been before the war had lots of friends. Honestly, that version of himself was friends with most people he met, having no reason not to trust people. The Bucky Barnes he was after Hydra only had one friend. The same man who had been Bucky’s first friend. And then Steve left. Forcing Bucky had to accept the fact that he was always meant to be alone. There was no point in making a connection with another person because if Steve— the person who had known the best version of Bucky— could leave, then who would ever stay?
But then there was Sam Wilson, funny, charming, beautiful Sam Wilson, who Bucky wanted to know so desperately that he made an exaggerated point to not get to know the other man. He ignored Sam's calls and texts after Steve's funeral, not wanting to set himself up for another heartbreak.
Or Bucky is obvious.
