He winced again when Inej took it firmly in hers, probably so he wouldn’t pull it away. She could be utterly merciless, and while he usually loved her for it, right now, with his bloodied knuckles literally in her hands, he wondered if it was completely wise of him to do so. Not that it would stop him anytime soon.

Summary
The brush of the warm leather of his gloves against her skin made Inej shiver. She wondered how many times Kaz would end up patching her up in one bathroom or another; wondered if the tension radiating between them would always be that achingly sweet. Even if this bathroom was not as gilded as the Geldrenner’s, she couldn’t help the sense of déjà vu. There was the same longing, a tenderness in his featherlight touch her body could not help but respond to.

Inej leans against the brick wall outside the front door of the Slat, crossing her legs on the sidewalk, communicating her nonchalance. Around a mouthful she says, “Waffles remind me of Nina, and the spice will last longer if I chew it. It’s a simple joy. I know those are a physical impossibility for you, but that doesn’t mean the rest of us need to suffer too. Besides,” she takes another monstrous bite, and her voice comes out muffled. “How do you know it’s bad? You’ve never even tried it.”
Perhaps she’s right, he thinks, watching bright red gush at the corner of her mouth. But it’s probably not worth the burn.
