Two years ago, Tim's life went to hell. But Mama saved JJ so he saved Mama by shooting Papa. It was hard, but the therapy helped and he could hide the physical scars well enough. It wasn't like his parents were ever around long enough to notice anything, they hadn't even realised he was kidnapped for months.
But now Robin, Jason Todd was dead, and Batman was going off the rails. He had to do something but what could he do? So he kept following the bat and helping those he could. People started talking about the Ghost who would help, it was better than them knowing who he was.
But Batman obviously needed a Robin, so who better to ask than the first? Nightwing had been nice enough and Dick Grayson had given him his first ever hug. He had to help.
