Summary
“I get tortured day in, day out for three years straight while you just get to sit back and watch. What a fucking world.” Something in him cracks, an ugly, dark feeling rearing its head in his spark, vengeful and demanding retribution.
“Did you enjoy the little show?” Max wheels on him, bridging the distance between them in a sparkbeat, fists clenched and teeth bared, body aching for a fight. “Was it fun seeing me get knocked down a peg?”
Grimlock’s optics spark wildly with anger and his whole body tenses. “You think I liked seeing any of that?”
Or: Max takes Grimlock back to Luna-1 for treatment post MTMTE #46, but doesn't anticipate all the feelings that come along with that decision.

Summary
“But I’ve always wondered,” Overlord continues in his low croon, a veneer of false fondness like this is a game they’re both relishing in playing, “what might happen if those prisoners were rescued? Would they spend the rest of their waking moments waiting for the day their captors come back for them, torn hopelessly in two different directions? The unyielding certainty of a cage and the frailty of freedom.”
Or: the missing scene between Max's therapy session and the hostage situation in MTMTE #6

Summary
Even so far removed from his old position, it’s still in Cerebros’ instinct to fix things, to smooth over any rough edges that he can. It’s gotten worse, now that his life has become so thoroughly entwined with two other lives, the threads of time sewn together here on Luna-1. It’s difficult to believe that there had once been millions of years before they met here. They all lived their own lives separate from each other—lives filled with hurts they’re still trying to find a way to live with.
That has perhaps been the hardest thing to come to terms with—there is so much Cerebros cannot fix. No matter how much he wishes he could, he can’t undo the violence that was inflicted on Max nor erase the pain he still carries from it; he can’t ease all of the terrors that have plagued Red Alert’s life. But he’ll be damned if he can’t try.

Summary
Overlord took a step back, really looking at Max for the first time, a sinister amusement playing across his face. “You got a little something there.” His thumb swiped across Max’s cheek, smearing the energon more than wiping it away.
Max glared at him. “Whose fault is that?”
“I thought you looked like you could use the assist.” Overlord gave a blithe shrug.
Or: Things go poorly for Max while working a case. Help comes from an unlikely source.

Summary
“I see it in you too, you know,” Jetfire said, earnest and without reservation. His hand raised slightly but he didn’t move to touch him again, honoring the distance Max had put between them. “So if you’re looking for good in the world, you won’t have to look far.”
It’s then that he allowed himself the weakness of looking away, giving a small laugh tinged with a bitterness that had only grown in him more and more as of late. He couldn’t imagine what it is that Jetfire saw in him, but it wasn’t goodness.

Summary
“It never is.” Maximus smiles weakly at him anyway, an expression only recently revived from the dead. “I get it. Just if you do ever want to be known? Or you want to know me? I’ll be around.”
The offer hangs in the air between them in solemn silence, something new and hopeful, something that might eventually grow its wings, something deserving of flight.

Summary
“What do you think we should see first?” Ambulon asks, still holding the pamphlet up for Fort Max to read. First Aid was supposed to join them as well, but quickly broke off from their little group to explore the festival on his own.
He squints at the long, long list of different games and stalls written in absurdly tiny print, unsure of where anyone was supposed to start with this.
Or: The Lost Light is currently stranded. What better way to pass the time than to hold a festival?

Summary
“Stay,” he says quietly, a prayer only for the two of them to hear, “At least til morning.” He’s missed Max terribly in the long weeks he’s spent alone on Luna-1, he admits if only to himself.
“When you say it like that, how could I refuse?”

Summary
Rung’s expression softens into something horribly sympathetic. Max knows how it all must look to him by now, the picture it paints of him. “You know… It’s natural to feel a sort of empathy with those who have experienced something similar.”
“Empathy,” Max repeats, rolling the word around in his mouth and finding that it doesn’t quite encompass it, not entirely. “I don’t think that’s it. Not entirely. I feel… envious. That it was over so quickly. I wish… it could have been over like that for me."

Summary
Seven years is hardly a long stretch of time, not with how long their species lives for, but these past few years have felt like his entire life—all he is and all he ever will be. So this, the bridge connecting the gap between his before and after, feels nothing short of a planetary collision.
“I thought you were…” Jetfire’s smile dissolves almost instantly at the unspoken last word hanging in the air between them.
“Dead? I hear that a lot lately,” Max says, hoping Jetfire won’t notice how his voice has changed, whetted down to a fine point by time. “I can’t imagine why.”
(Or: a relationship in two parts, seven years apart)

Summary
Anger could be righteous when properly directed. It was more understandable in that way, almost admirable. It was easier for Max to say that he was angry than that he was lonely and hurting. It was easier to say he was angry than to say that he had been hopelessly desperate to turn his hurt into something more manageable and for a moment he had tricked himself into believing that killing those Decepticons would right some wrong inflicted upon him.
Rage was sharpened by grief into something as dangerous as a physical weapon. He needs to hold onto it more than anything else because it makes him feel brave. If he no longer has that, then he’s just scared and alone, still in that room waiting for help that will never come in time.
Or:
Chapter 1: 4 million years of "I'll unpack all of that later" finally catches up.
Chapter 2: Fort Max's very good, very personally healing moon vacation
