Summary
Shane throws one punch, gets a god complex, and Ilya realises he is so down bad for his husband.
“You were defending my honour, Hollander?”
There’s warmth laced in the words, and Shane can’t help but laugh ever so slightly, but he catches something serious in Ilya’s expression.
“Can I tell you something?”
Shane nods, hoping he’s finally going to get some sort of explanation for Ilya’s bizarre behaviour. For a second, he worries that he might be mad, although it would be ironic for Ilya to lecture anyone on reckless behaviour since he's been its number one proponent since birth.
“It was so hot.”

Summary
Shane is sitting above the covers on the bed, which they clearly made by pushing the two twin beds together. “This is my roommate, Shane,” says Ilya. Shane looks up from his phone and shakes his head as he blushes, “you’re such an asshole.”
Ilya says, “Harris asked if beds were made of cardboard.” Ilya gets close to the bed frame and knocks, showing how sturdy it is. “Is not cardboard, very strong. Hard to break.”
“Ilya,” Shane says in a tone both reprimanding and chirpy.
Or, Ilya takes Harris’s advice and films videos for TikTok while at the Olympic village.

Summary
Since becoming captain of the Montreal team two seasons ago, Shane Hollander had gotten much better at socializing off the ice. It was part of the job, a job and a team and a bunch of amazing men he truly cared about, fucking loved, held up the cup with last season. They had just won against New York, and with a fucking wide margin. Shane scoring a hat-trick, and even Ryan the rookie getting a goal in, his first. A lot of reasons to go out and celebrate.
Shane very rarely stepped out of his comfort zone or did something surprising, much less unexpectedly outrageous. But the next morning in the hotel room fragments of memory from last night started resurging, Ryan and the tall girl and laughing and pain. Oh, fuck. Slowly the pieces of the puzzle were coming together.
Shane started to panic in the windowless bathroom. And once he turned to see his full body in the mirror, he felt like screaming.

Summary
Ottawa, Summer 2004
This summer it felt different from the start. Shane was thirteen. It was an awkward age. Some of the boys at hockey camp, and now they were only boys, no more co-ed practice at this age, were clearly getting taller, heavier, their voices sometimes breaking. There was a lot of teasing. Shane, who still hadn't really hit his growth spurt, was not nearly among the tallest but was, without a doubt and by far, the best player in his age group at camp. Quick thinking, smooth on the ice, excellent shooter.
Until the Russian kid arrived. His name was Ilya. And of course it was Shane's parents who were his host family.
---
Montreal, Winter 2013
It started as a rumour. The hockey world loved rumours, gossip, stories whose origin no one could detect.
Only this time Shane was interested. This time he hoped that the rumour was true. A new player being added to their roster mid-season. To improve Montreal's performance. A player who'd spent the last five years a major star of the Russian KHL. Whose career Shane kept tabs on, whose games he'd watch online when he had a chance. An amazing talent, and he'd only admit this to himself, probably a better player than Shane.
