    She’s a little bigger than she felt in his arms, but that’s barely any improvement. Babies are supposed to be a little chubby, a little wrinkly. And she’s…not. Her little fingers and toes are developed, maybe, and her nose is scrunched up in her sleep, but for a newborn he knows has been carried to term, she looks premature.

    His fingers curl against the glass when he touches it. Eyes glued only on her, even when the cold at his fingertips tries to tear his attention away for a moment. Nothing can pull his eyes away from her. All he can think of is her. How little she is. He didn’t know she was there and look at what he went and did to her. Drank, stressed himself out, put his life and health on the line, and the person taking the brunt of it was her. She didn’t ask for that, and he put her through it anyway, even if it was unknowingly.

    How’s he supposed to be a good dad when the first gift he gave her was near-death, before even giving her life?
