  1. Summary

There’s something about Molly and Caleb that could be powerful enough to fix the multiverse’s little problem with rifts. At least a mysterious stranger calling himself Keeper seems to think so, having tasked them with this mighty burden—only, neither Molly nor Caleb have any clue what that thing might be.

And the rifts are getting bigger.

    Summary

At forty years old, Viktor is a freshly divorced small bookstore owner. He finally has the life he’s always wanted, having left his ex-husband and the unforgiving world of academia behind. Now, he spends most of his time reading, writing book reviews, and organizing bookish events.

When Jayce Talis, the country’s most famous thriller writer, returns from a two-year absence with a harrowing novel about a man’s fall into a ravine and subsequent descent into madness, Viktor knows he has to try to invite him to a Q&A and pick his brain. What starts off as a business agreement quickly becomes more, as sparks fly and the two men find themselves craving each other’s company more and more.

Will they find what they have always searched for in each other, or will they let their fears get the best of them before they can even become something more?

    Summary

“I am guessing you have another invitation,” Viktor says softly. Jayce’s non-answer of shrugging his shoulders is enough of a confirmation for Viktor to continue. “The flowers did not work? Or the strongly worded letters?”

“Not even Mel is working with me on this. She says I have to go,” Jayce spits, “like I — like I’m expected to recite all our research on a coin flip. As if anyone there besides her will even understand it.”

He hides his eyes behind the cup of his hands, though Viktor knows he’s still staring down at their scattered notes for a distraction. Between vellum and coffee-stained sheafs of schematics is a familiar, albeit more elaborately decorated, square of near-black cardstock. Its gold filigree glitters in the frosted light coming in from the windows, yet it brings no warmth. No glee. No self-satisfaction at having caught it too late.

Viktor slides it out from between their notes with two fingers, leaving it on the tabletop for the both of them to read. Jayce’s name is prominent in thin, blocky text — another invitation, another offer for his time in exchange for a few hours of pretend in front of a flock that’s already made up its mind.

    Summary

"I think I'd like to do it more," Jayce muses.
    "What? Cook?"
"Yeah. For you. I mean, for the lab. For us."

It's just a hobby. Or at least that's what Viktor keeps telling himself as Jayce starts cooking for him every day. Surely it doesn't mean anything. And surely Jayce won't let it get out of hand. Right?

    Summary

    “Are you… real?”

Jayce smiles for the first time in recent memory. “I could ask the same thing.”

“You’re supposed to be dead," Viktor tells him.

“Funny,” Jayce says. “We have a way of doing that, don’t we? Not dying.”

Jayce finds himself in a world much like his own, but with the familiar pieces rearranged. All he cares about is Viktor.

or, Jayce and Viktor make it out of the war alive. For Jayce, it was yesterday. For Viktor, it was three years ago.
