Summary
Levi took hold of Erwin’s arm, cold against his palm, and slowly pressed the injection into his skin. Some things simply had to be done, and nobody could have the luxury of lingering onto all the reasons not to do it. If Levi were a different man, he would have lowered himself onto the forest floor, and closed Petra’s unseeing eyes. Eren would have been eaten. If Levi were a different man, he would have hesitated when Kenny’s people attacked him, and he would be dead. If Levi were a different man, he would think about the look in Armin’s eye, who it reminded him of, how he spoke of the sea, and he would try and negotiate the possibility of injecting only half the dose, making a daring bet to match the sort Erwin would make.
Levi is not a different man.

Summary
Levi is intimately familiar with fire after spending more than half his life with it as the main (and often only) source of light. He suspects that these surface lamps might be making him heady. Maybe there are some sun-kissed herbs in them? But Erwin would not stand anything that would addle his mind so. Perhaps the underground was filled with fumes, masked by the aromas of filth and pestilence. Perhaps this, staring at the warm light as it drew sharp shadows across Erwin's features, was clarity.
Or, the one where Erwin is being exceedingly difficult when Levi makes his move.
