Alastor's curse in Hell is that it hurts to make connections. The touch of another sinner will burn and blister his skin; the hands of the ones he loves will never be a soothing touch, never a comfort, only pain.
So Alastor avoided touch, avoided friends.
Until the day Lucifer arrives, picks a fight with him and lays his hands on Alastor - and Alastor discovers that the Devil's hands do not burn him, do not hurt him. Touch starved and desperate, he chases after any kind of contact, whatever the risk may be.

Lucifer’s job as King of Hell is to reassign the contracts of Sinners whose Overlords have died. When a serial killer begins picking off Overlords and creating more work for Lucifer, he quickly identifies Alastor as his number one suspect - and believes the only way to stop his killing spree is to take Alastor’s contract for himself. But Lucifer, overconfident in his own immortality, doesn’t realise that by doing so, he’s put a target on his own back - and he might be next.

Summary
Lucifer stared at the ground in front of him to steady his steps, but as his eyes focused, he saw red splotches staining the carpet and spattering across the floor. His yellow eyes followed the trail of blood to the main stairwell, where Alastor was passed out halfway up the steps, a red pool seeping into the carpet around him.
Man, that was a lot of blood. Lucifer wasn’t sure exactly how much blood humans had, but he knew it would make them pass out if they didn’t keep enough of it inside their fragile bodies–and that appeared to be Alastor’s state at the moment. Lucifer could even see the mangled hand steadily spurting blood with every feeble heartbeat.

He unwittingly discovers he's spending his afterlife essentially being the right hand to the King of Hell. He learns more about Hell's culture and about the king's silly daughter
