Zhongli and Ajax enjoyed a lifetime as a married couple before the latter peacefully died of old age.
His death created a rift between Zhongli and their son Haibao; rift which still showed no sign of mending despite the two centuries that went by since. Close to giving up, an eroded Zhongli grieves his failure aloud at Childe's tombstone; unaware of his son's eavesdropping.(Or, Zhongli angst in front of Childe's tomb because I was inspired by this Twitter post in which their son kinda trampled on his feelings on his birthday and my mind conjured up this scene of Zhongli talking to Childe (not literally) through the stone about everything that went wrong to let it off his chest without knowing that his son had been here all along + they have a heart-to-heart cuz I'm not a monster.)

Zhongli slithers around him—actually slithers, tail curling, wings shifting in a way that disturbs the ambient humidity—and Childe realizes he is not allowed to leave. He is, in fact, being hoarded.
“Okay,” he says slowly. “This is, like. A thing, right?”
Zhongli blinks.
“A thing?”
“Yeah. Like a dragon thing. Like the part where you—" He gestures vaguely around the den. “—nest and hoard stuff and get unreasonably attached to shiny things and start calling your boyfriend mine in a tone that suggests you’ll level a mountain if someone looks at him funny.”
Zhongli doesn’t respond.
Instead, the dragon lowers his head, breathes in at Childe’s neck, and growls.
In which bleeding out is less dangerous than flirting while bleeding out in front of a dragon with hoarding problems.
(Or, maybe Childe should stop getting mortally injured in increasingly creative ways if he doesn’t want Zhongli to hoard him like a limited-edition relic with attachment issues.)
