The sound of the lock sliding into place was too deliberate. Too calm.
Zayne shrugged off his lab coat. The stark white fabric fell in slow motion over the back of the chair, and then he rolled his shoulders—tight, tired, tense. You watched his fingers unbutton his cuffs, rolling up his sleeves slowly, with practiced ease.
Curtains drawn. Room dimming. Silence folding over itself.
“I sincerely hope,” he murmured as he walked toward you, past you, pulling each curtain shut until the room felt private, secretive—dangerous, “it’s not another envelope.”

“Do you ever stop talking?” you manage, your voice softer than you meant.
He hums—a sound halfway between laughter and thought. “You’d miss it if I did.”
“Would I?”
He lifts his head, just slightly. His eyes catch yours — red catching light, dark lashes half-closed. “You would.”
Something in the way he says it makes your stomach turn over, a slow tumble of heat and ache. He looks at you like he’s tracing the shape of a secret.
“Say something,” he whispers.
You don’t.
You can’t.
Instead, your hand—traitorous little thing—shifts by an inch, your fingers barely grazing the fabric of his sleeve. It’s enough. The smallest contact, and yet it burns.
He notices. Of course he does. His gaze flicks to where your fingers touched, then back to your face. “You do that again,” he says, voice low, “and I might forget I’m supposed to be asleep.”
Your breath catches. “And if I don’t?”
"Careful, sweetheart," he huffs. His smile is slow and dangerous but just as fond. It does an incredible job of turning your brain to mush. "You should know by now, I'm not so easily sated."

He’s still in full battle gear, armor slick with mud and blood, his long silver hair matted below his shoulders, his eyes burning like forged steel. His gauntlets drip with someone else’s blood. He looks every bit the legend they say he is—terrible, magnificent, untouchable. A creature carved from vengeance and ash.
For a long, terrible heartbeat, the world stills.
He looks at you. You look at him. The air between you hums with tension so sharp it could slice skin.
He takes one step forward, the sound of his boots echoing across the marble floor. The servants shrink back, heads bowed low. The scent of blood reaches you before he does—sharp, metallic, unmistakable.
You tilt your chin, refusing to flinch. “You reek,” you say, your voice smooth, lethal.
He pauses. The corner of his mouth twists upward, a cruel, tired smirk. “So do corpses, Princess,” he says softly. “But at least they’re quiet.”
And just like that—
You remember why you married him.
And why, despite everything, you still haven’t decided whether you hate him… or envy him.

Hashirama is bawling in a pregnant Mito’s arms, Izuna is teary-eyed, Tobirama looks done with life as he hands him a handkerchief, and down below, the villagers throw petals in the air in celebration.
Kurama, the backstabbing fox, sits atop his shrine altar, in a shrunken form, and looks smug as hell.
