The swing rocks repetitively back and forth, his chest clenched tightly to avoid the incoming tears. He manages to inhale slowly, then exhale even slower until everything dulls down to numbness, like a piece of him had been ripped out and there was only a shell left. Mike just wants it to end, every twinge of this aching pain to subside. He thinks back to the quarry – selfishly, he wishes El wouldn’t have saved him. At least he wouldn’t have to be faced with this.
And suddenly, there was wind, swooping him out of his thoughts, ruffling his hair and making the old swings let out a long ‘creeaak’.
“Mike?” A voice whispers softly, familiarly. He would recognize it from anywhere.

It hurts, and there’s nothing he can do to ease the pain. He looks across the room at Mike and all he sees is beauty where minutes ago he only saw his best friend. He notices entire constellations in the freckles strewn across his nose, stars glittering in his eyes, and it all seems inevitable. He loves Mike. He loves him and it’s a foregone conclusion, a wish on a shooting star destined to burn out.
