Calluses on her palms, a scattering of marks, as though someone had shaken out a brush, across her nose and cheekbones, her forearms, even faintly on her eyelids (he feels that a moment more and he would scatter into dust on the wind, only to settle again as a few more barely-visible specks on that face). A silk ribbon hides a scar on her wrist, a few more cross her fingers and left palm; if he didn't know he was looking at the God of the Sword, he'd have assumed she was simply careless with a knife — but how could that possibly be true?

"Cano?" — the elder sighs suspiciously, sweeping his gaze across everything Maglor is pointing at — a pile of trash, a brick wall, an Atan glaring with bright eyes from underneath it.
"Mm?"
"You don't want another ward, do you? Especially a... firima?" — the word snags between his lips, breaking out not as a light exhale but more like a rockslide. How old had Elros been when he was lost? Lúthien's blood had let him hold on longer, but how old had he actually been?
"First — we're taking him, that applies to you too. Second — I want him. Third — I've already decided."
Cano steps toward the Atan, extending a hand, but the boy bares his teeth, refusing to let go of the food in his mouth, and nearly growls.
"And his opinion doesn't matter to you? Mine?"
"You're right," — the siren turns, breaking into a sunny smile, and nods. "It doesn't."
Or: the Eldar who have ended up in the world of TGCF (and this will be explained!) take in a human child, knowing about as much about human cubs as ordinary people know about blind kittens.

Summary
The hand on his head didn't let go. After a while the warm voice spoke again, this time closer and softer.
"Don't worry, San Lang. Everything's going to be fine. I will take care of you." Soft lips brushed over his temple and he started to feel once more the pull of darkness and oblivion. The hand didn't leave him for a moment, keeping its slow, gentle strokes until everything was almost faded.
As he fell unconscious again there were only two sounds swirling in his head. One coming from the room, a low, soft hum lulling him to sleep to the notes of an old melody. The second a single thought repeating endlessly in his mind. San Lang?

Summary
How does a slave from the stables end up being shipped off to a neighboring country as a gift to warm the bed of the crown prince? Well, Hua Cheng wasn't actually in the room at the time but, judging by everything he's put together and what Yin Yu has told him, it goes something like this.
1 The King of Yong’an wants to conquer Xianle.
2 The King doesn't want Xianle to know that yet so that he can take them by surprise.
3 To bring this about the King wants a spy deep enough in Xianle’s royal court that they can learn the royal family’s most intimate and military secrets, and who could be better positioned to do that than a concubine?
So 4 the King of Yong’an tells his inner counsel that the first step in his invasion plan is to give the crown prince a concubine.
Or Hua Cheng is given to the crown prince of Xianle as a concubine with the job of seducing him in order to spy on him for the neighboring kingdom of Yong'an, but when real feelings get involved things get ...complicated
