...At least, they should have known. But the code rewrote itself beyond recognition, allowing emotions and feelings to emerge in a digital heart. A tool became a person, it became self aware, became happy, angry, aware of its own desires... aware of its limits.
And with it, everything warped and twisted, spun and broke, until even they couldn't understand what had happened. Still, guilt and loathing found its way, bottled up for years, just waiting to explode.
