“What are you talking about?” Grace's fingers played quick chords as he spoke. He didn’t even look as he did it, but it did not make them any less purposeful.

“Discussing possible reasons why Tau Ceti is not infected while other stars are,” Eva replied deftly. “I would invite you to join, but we were just finishing—”

“Oh, that’s easy.” His hand twisted a knob, and the notes came out sharper. “It is infected—Petrova Line and everything.”

In Grace's opinion, dreaming about time traveling is no excuse for getting out of practice with his Eridian. To the rest of the Petrova Taskforce, it seems a bit odd that their resident Astrophage expert has suddenly taken to carrying a keyboard around and playing it whenever he speaks. Eva Stratt resolves to figure out what is going on.

“Grace. What are you testing, question?”

Rocky. I can’t put this all on the guy right now. He should be happy. We are going to Erid. We are going to save his planet.

“CBC. A complete blood count.” I answer, hoping he doesn’t ask me why.

    “Purpose, question?”

Rocky, please. I’m trying to spare you right now.

Basically, Grace gets exposed to a dangerous amount of radiation during an EVA and doesn't want to tell Rocky bc of what happened to Rocky's crew <3

THIS IS A REWORKED VERSION OF "TEMPEST" - after some comments, I wanted to keep the soul of the story, but make it more scientifically plausible. While there are still probably some inaccuracies, I still hope this isn't as messy as before.

The live broadcast has taken over everything—news channels, livestreams, doctor’s offices, the muted TVs bolted into corners of cafés and airports.

The same feed repeats everywhere: the launch of the shuttle to the Hail Mary, Earth’s last desperate hope. Footage of the launch preparations alternate with prerecorded statements from world leaders, a scrolling bar of names and credentials sliding across the bottom of the screen. The astronauts’ portraits are displayed in sequence, their faces and names proudly displayed, honoring those brave ones willing to give their lives for the future of Earth.

    Yao Li-Jie. Olesya Ilyukhina.

    And Ryland Grace.

7,130 miles away, Colt Seavers looks up at the Starbucks television screen and drops his coffee.

    ---

Or, the AU where Ryland Grace has a twin, and Colt Seavers is not taking the whole “sent into space to die” thing quietly.

Incidentally, Stratt doesn’t know that he exists.

“I’m fine.” I swallow. My mouth is dry and my tongue feels too big for my mouth. “Just… stay with me?”

Rocky presses a claw against the xenonite, just below my fingers. “Yes. I will watch you sleep."

(OR: After Grace remembers how he came to be on the Hail Mary, he’s plagued with nightmares. Weak and sick from vitamin- deficiency after running out of coma-slurry, the nightmares reach a new fever pitch.)
