“Right, perhaps a former familiar, now turned…whatever you are, could go along with him, keep track of the time so he doesn’t fry?” Laszlo said, reaching over to tap the top of Guillermo’s head in emphasis.
Guillermo wrinkled his nose at the wholesome suggestion. He was a little worried Laszlo was going to suggest they fuck. He should probably be relieved that this was what Laszlo had in mind to help Nandor. “You think I should…take him on a beach date?” He smiled at the thought.
“You said it, not me. But yes, precisely. He needs to be wooed a little. Reassured, perhaps. Show him you’re locked down, so to speak.”

“Why do you do it?” Nori asks the fifteenth night in a row when the burns on Elina’s shoulders have grown so angry and blistered and deep that when the merfairies came to collect her they found her passed out from the pain. Elina remains silent for a long time as she attempts to find the words. “I can feel them now,” she says at last, pressing Nori’s fingers to her gills. “And I can’t unfeel it. The water. Sliding in and out.” Like drowning. She presses harder. “I miss when I breathed air.”
