"You know what I am, Your Grace." Neuvillette murmured, as if he could tell what Wriothesley was thinking. Wriothesley sat up straighter, trying one of his half smiles on for size.

"Oh? You're telling me your secrets? I'm surprised, Monsieur." Wriothesley tried for his typical irreverence but found he could not maintain it, there before the heavy weight of Neuvillette's regard.

"You know what I am." Neuvillette repeated, something in his silken tone making shivers break out over Wriothesley's skin.

    -------------------------------------------------

Being a werewolf, Wriothesley always thought Neuvillette beyond his reach. As it turned out, he was very wrong about that. Unseen by them, the events in Nod Krai trigger a shift in Wriothesley while away from his safe room in the Fortress of Meropide.

    Summary

For the first time in his long life, Neuvillette finds himself wanting to court someone. It is, he decides, a matter that requires research. Guidance. The insight of someone who knows the person in question well.
It does not occur to Wriothesley — not even once — that he is both the advisor and the subject of every conversation they have.
    It will, eventually.

    Summary

"Neuvillette knew, all at once, what he was about to do.
    “No.”
This time the word was torn out of him. He moved faster, water surging at his command as he crossed the flooded stone, Hydro gathering around him in bright, violent arcs.
    Wriothesley turned away.
He pivoted toward the oncoming swell instead, lifting one arm as cryo burst from him in a sharp, blinding flare. Ice surged upward, jagged and uneven, forming a barrier between the retreating vessel and the next violent rush of water. It held for all of half a second before the Primordial Sea slammed into it and sent cracks racing through the whole thing.
    Still, it bought time."

AKA - Neuvillette has always understood the language of water. So when the sea refuses him, he knows something is terribly wrong.
During the fall of Fontaine, the Duke descends into the depths to save those who cannot save themselves. No body is recovered. No trace remains.
What does the sea do with what it takes?
He tells himself it is only duty that drives him back to the Primordial Sea. Not grief. Not longing. Not the quiet, unbearable realization that what he lost was never just an ally.

    Summary

Neuvillette turns up his nose slightly at the thought of walking amongst the newborn race. Had the Cataclysm not just happened? Had these creatures already forgotten that they lost Egeria to the desert in the south? How can she easily ask him to walk amongst such arrogant creatures?

But then, his memories brought forth a smile; a smile so gentle and kind despite the life it had lived.

    A life it will live.

Ah, this really is fate’s works in motion, he thinks somewhat bitterly. Whether he wants to or not, he has to accept Focalors’s invitation to the city and become their Chief Justice. It’s the only way for the future to unfold and for him to understand why he did what he did. It was a promise after all, the first he’s made.

For Fontaine to stand where it is, Time has decided to grace her powers unto Wriothesley by throwing him a thousand years into the past. After all, the Hydro Dragon must first understand humanity in order to pardon their sins, and who better to convince said Dragon to accept the position of the Iudex if not the one who will eventually hold his heart?
