Each word weighs heavy on his tongue as he forces them out.
Ratio’s eyes snap back to Aventurine’s face and his answer comes matter-of-factly, with no hesitation: “As always.”

It was his father’s favourite story to tell, and over the many years it was repeated the story never changed, his father seeming to believe it was so impressive it required no further embellishment. It never seemed to matter how many days had passed since he’d last heard the account; despite having no memory of the event itself, Kaoru could recite the story backwards and forwards, every word identical to those his father had been so keen to retell.
If he so chose, he could even render it on parchment, in unfading ink, indelible and as unchanging as his father had always been.
