Summary
It was kind of weird. Technically, apprentices chose their masters. But that wasn't really how things were done. Most apprentices chose whichever master their parents wanted them to learn under. If a master advertised their school, it was to adults, so that parents would send their kids there. Agott had never heard of a master putting up posters in the junior apprentice library. But Qifrey seemed very new to this.
The poster had a sketch of a stone house on a steep hillside, under a broad expanse of stars. There were a few relevant details, like his name, information about where his atelier was, the types of magic he could teach. To apply, you could send a letter through the Great Hall's mail exchange or—and Agott re-read this sentence to make sure she hadn't gotten something confused— you could "just find me and ask!" Next to that there was a little drawing, simplified but still recognizable as the witch Agott had seen through the bookshelves.
And he'd been apprentice to Beldaruit, the Sage of the Wise? That made no sense. Witches should be breaking down his door to put their children in his atelier, he shouldn't be advertising here.
Agott chooses her own teacher.

"Maybe I'll never sleep again," Olly said. "That'll work, right?"
"Of course," Qifrey said, drily. "And with no negative side effects, I'm sure of it."
"Hah," Olly said. He was so tired. "Sometimes I wish there were more selective memory spells," he said, rubbing his temples. "Just to take away the worst parts, you know? I wish I didn't have to hold onto this stuff forever."
He realized the hand on his shoulder had grown still, and turned to look at Qifrey. His face had gone still with shock, like Olly had turned around and slapped him. With a rush of horror Olly realized what he had said, and who he was talking to.
Olly has a nightmare about what happened in Noz, so he stays up and talks to Qifrey about it.

"I should have been there with you," Stede said, voice rough. "If I hadn't left—"
"Stede," Ed said, frustrated. He wiggled backwards out of Stede's arms and held his face in his hands, so that Stede couldn't look away. "It wasn't you leaving that did it. Stop thinking it was your fault."
"Okay," Stede said, clearly agreeing because he felt like he had to, and not because he actually agreed.
"Actually," Ed said, shaking Stede's head slightly for emphasis. "I was getting over you. I did some really excellent wallowing. I ate all of your marmalade, and I drank almost all of your brandy."
That got him a laugh.
"That's so much marmalade," Stede said.
After everything settles down, Ed and Stede finally start to talk about it.

"We can't undo it," the tech said, slightly desperate. "Its memory has been purged, as is standard practice after a casualty incident. The files aren't saved, they're deleted."
Oh. They were talking about my memory.
"What's going on?" Ratthi said. Pin Lee turned to look at him, then me. Her eyes softened, despite the rest of her staying angry. So she also recognized me. Great.
"Do you know who we are?" she asked me.
"No," I said. SecUnits are not supposed to read the newsfeeds, so that's the answer she and the tech would be expecting. "I have no information on the last seven hundred and twenty hours."
Ratthi made a sound like he'd been punched. Pin Lee's mouth set into a grim line. She turned back to the tech.
"I know there are ways to recover deleted files," she said. "Recover them."
After the events of All Systems Red, Murderbot wakes up in the company cubicle with no memory of the survey with the PresAux team.

TITLE: Light-based spell with pressure-activated overlapping ring (colloq., “The Glowstone Path”)
DESCRIPTION: Produces hands-free, maintenance-free illumination of paved footpaths for both public safety and decorative purposes. The sigil and signs are cut into the inside-facing surfaces of the stone, eliminating physical wear and the need for regular redrawing of the seal. The pressure-activation mechanism (i.e., by stepping on the top stone) leaves the spell dormant when not in use (i.e., being stepped upon), allowing the spell to be perpetually self-regenerating. As all components of the spell are concealed beneath the top stone, it is acceptable for Unknowing as well as Witch usage.
