Summary
When Nureyev accepts a position on Buddy Aurinko’s crew, he does so with the full expectation that it will be temporary. It’s not a conscious or exclusive decision, rather it’s one he makes every time he takes a job or makes living arrangements. He is by virtue a temporary person. But then Juno Steel accepts the same offer he had and Buddy starts throwing around words like family and unbreakable trust and things progress far past Nureyev’s preferred brand of temporary before he has a chance to notice it. And by the time he does, it’s far too late for him to fall back on disappearances.

Nureyev doesn’t want to think about what that means, but he does. You don’t survive a blast like that- it just isn’t possible. He knows that. They all know that. There’s no reason to risk getting caught rooting around in rubble just to find- Nureyev’s breath hitches, and he feels himself start to shake.
Buddy had started talking to him at some point, is still talking to him, but he doesn’t hear any of it. Nureyev’s head is filled with static and he knows Buddy is coaxing him to sit down and wiping tears from his cheeks but he can’t feel it happening. If you were to lay Peter Nureyev out and cleave him open, you wouldn’t be able to hollow him out. There wouldn’t be anything there to pry away from the meat and bones of him. Maybe if you tried hard enough you’d find a handful of dark, red-tinted memories that stunk like rot and left your hands sticky, but beyond that?
There was hardly a person there at all. No one to fall in love with. Nureyev knew that- still knows it. He doesn’t understand how he forgot.
