“Did you run all the way here?” Keith asks, taking in Lance's appearance
“No, I took a bus.” Lance smiles, but it's strained and almost uncomfortable to stare at. “If you left your phone in the break room, does that mean you already had lunch? Because if you didn’t, we should eat together! We haven’t done that in a while. Also—” He starts to ramble, his words jumbled and almost breathless. Keith hopes the grimace he feels on his face isn’t obvious, but the way Lance continues to speak, wide blue eyes darting across the busy office, makes him think that even if he was grimacing, Lance isn’t going to notice.
The spiral is starting and Keith isn’t prepared.

There’s a beginning, no, not that beginning. Not the one with the flashing lights, a stranger's hands looped around his waist with his tongue heavy and muscles shivering from what he assumed was too many drinks.
No, it’s a different kind of beginning. The kind of beginning that started with a snake bite and ended with Lance having his heart ripped out of his chest as the police car pulls away.
(Lance deals with the aftermath of Keith letting him go, and learns that sometimes, recovery doesn't always go as planned)

“Keith…” he starts out, voice quivering like a leaf in the wind. His whole body is shaking, hands trembling by his sides as he stares at Keith. “I think…s-something bit me.”
The tools clatter to the sand.
“Show me.” He orders, sliding to his knees. Lance obliges, shakily raising his left foot.
Right there, on his heel, under the faded scar from the old ankle chain, was two puncture wounds. A snake.
“Sweetheart, this is really important,” he says, standing up and grabbing Lance’s shoulders. “Did you hear anything, like a hissing sound or maybe a-a rattle?”
Sluggishly, Lance nods, silent tears running down his cheeks.
(Keith lets Lance go)

Summary
“Honey, slow down!” He hears Keith yell, but both of them are laughing anyhow as he practically skids inside the building, looking around with awestruck eyes.
Plants line up in little garden beds on either side of him, small little things that still have to be nurtured carefully. Water trickles down from small pipes strung with wires from the ceiling, keeping the garden soil damp.
How strange. Water in the desert.
Soil spills line the small walkway, squishing underneath his sore feet as he walks deeper into the small and dim greenhouse. Carefully, he reaches out a hand to touch one of the small sprouts of green, the small tag sticking out of the soil naming it a green pepper.
“So this is what you’ve been working on, huh?” It’s practically a whisper, but Keith hears it anyhow.
Keith watches him with clear hesitation, standing still as a statue in the entryway. “Yeah.” His reply is soft, barely heard. “Just for you.”
(Keith's long awaited gift is revealed, and Lance mind ultimately breaks under the pressure)
