Summary
Laena, as prim and proper as someone with a belly as large as hers can, waddles over and sits down at the foot of the bed, a tense jaw the only thing to betray the severity of her mood. “Get out.” She demands quietly.
The whore looks at him like she is expecting him to tell her to stay. Annoyed, he makes a face at her and motions pointedly towards the door. She huffs and puffs and glares—not towards him, because she’s not that foolish. No, all her attitude is pointed in Laena’s direction as she gathers herself and her clothes and rushes out.
His wife lies back against his pillows, staring up at the opposite wall in a silence that may be simply contemplative, or the far more likely option of malicious deliberation. He waits for her to speak, but she does not, so he bends and picks up his britches.
A few moments later, he is dressed from the waist down and reclined parallel to her on the bed. Her silence stretches long enough that he doesn’t expect it when her voice cuts through the silence disbelievingly. “Did that little bitch just scowl at me?”

“I did promise, didn’t I?” He tries for a smile, but it falls flat. “When you gave me your crown. Anything you wanted. Tell me what you want, dear brother.”
He thinks of all the things he wants. All the people he wishes to see. There is so much that is out of the realm of possibility. But of the things Viserys can do? Out of the things he wants that he could have with nothing more than his brother’s word, a snap of his finger?
“Nothing you’ll give me.”

“Really?” They say together. Luke sounds awed, Jace sounds skeptical. He nods at them both. “My mother did this with King Viserys and Uncle Daemon, too.”
“Queen Alicent?” Jace asks, putting special emphasis on her name, as apparently that is the most disbelieving part about everything he said. He nods, but the boy does not look convinced. “You don’t even like her.” He says bluntly.

Alicent had prayed already to the mother, the maiden, and the crone. She prayed to the warrior for peace for her father’s soul and to the smith to bring her strength. Alicent had bypassed the stranger entirely and had saved the father for last, knowing that is where she would sit the longest.
She kneeled there until her knees were red and raw. She prayed that the murderer who had brutally slain him in his bed would have their sins brought to light and that they would be judged accordingly. She prayed that duty and honor would prevail as the gods intended. Alicent had faith that Otto Hightower would get the justice he deserved.
As she is escorted back to the Red Keep, she thinks of all the other times she’s shared this carriage. When she had her father and her friend and her maidenhead, dressed in pale blues instead of Targaryen red and black.
The blue dress she wears to go see Rhaenyra is a little bit darker and in a more mature style than she would have worn before her marriage. Still, she hopes it invokes the memories of the affection they used to share.

Ser Erryk does not suffer from the same compulsion his sworn brother seems to have that causes him to sulk around the castle, nipping at the heels of the queen consort as they prattle on incessantly whenever the Princess so much as breathes in their immediate vicinity.
He is, in fact, truly fond of Princess Rhaenyra and more often than not enjoys the days when he stands guard for her and her family.
Today is not one of those days.
