“We could…be friends, maybe.” Shane’s voice was small, hesitant on almost every sound.
“Wha–” Ilya’s reply was less of a word and more of a stupid, confused noise like he’d been punched. That probably would’ve caught him less off guard than what Shane actually said.
“Y’know, text about the hockey gossip? You call, I answer? Friends.”
Something terrifyingly bright exploded into Ilya’s chest. Something dangerous, that felt like maybe it could keep him warm through the summer in Russia, through the chill that permeated his childhood home no matter how warm it was outside.
“And also we like to suck each other’s dicks,” he quipped, trying to deflect.
“Fuck off, Rozanov.”

He had little to do with Ilya Rozanov. They had met, years ago, at the prospect cup before he was drafted, and then kept meeting over and over. He’d done a good job at getting under Shane’s skin, over confident and stereotypical Dom that he was, and, after a weirdly charged ad shoot that had Shane scurrying back to his hotel room before he had even showered, he had never stopped. Drafted as rivals, made even more infamous by the idea of Dom vs Sub, Rozanov had never skipped a chance to chirp at him, pretending to flirt, calling him pretty - not handsome, not cool, pretty, it didn’t matter that Shane was a Sub, in the sports world, that read as an insult - and grinding his gears until they were sanded down to nothing. Shane Hollander fucking hated Ilya Rozanov. And Ilya Rozanov would not leave him alone.
