Despite the ache in his gut, Jesse stoops and lifts up his jerrycan of gasoline—it’s heavy like sin—and pops apart the lid from its clasp. Jesse carries the tin awkwardly; he’s malpracticed in the art of arson. He doesn’t know whether to pour gasoline onto the silver-shimmering, snake-scale pavement, the bushes hedging the house from the sidewalk, or to smack the liquid onto the door, windows, and walls.
And Jesse, staring at the shit, can’t imagine it anywhere but coating everything.

The parchment is expensive. Tav runs her fingertips over the wax seal and hesitates; she knows what this is. She is not surprised that it is happening, she is, however, surprised at being included in some way. Perhaps, she allows herself, she had hoped it wouldn't be so soon. (She has already put to bed the part of herself that had hoped it would not happen at all.) Gale had, after all, been very clear - and devastatingly gentle - in his explanation.
