Summary
There's a moment as the two of them catch their breath in shock, suspended in time with adrenaline pumping through WD's veins at the near-disaster they just avoided. Her arms are cradled around Ripley's torso, holding her almost like she'd simply dipped her down while they were dancing rather than stopping Ripley from smashing ass-first into solid stone. She's so caught up in making sure Ripley's okay that it takes her a few seconds to look back up at her face, only to find Ripley staring at her with wide eyes and slight tinge to her cheeks.
WD feels her face grow warm.
"Uh. . ." she coughs awkwardly, pulling Ripley back up to stand while avoiding her gaze. "Glad I, uh, caught you before you. . . fell, I guess."
Ripley snickers.
"My sincerest gratitude, oh knight in shining armor," she says, and WD can't help the slight satisfaction in her chest at being called a knight. It reminds her of their first kiss and the way Ripley smiles at her makes her think they're both remembering the same thing. "Very romantic of you."

Summary
Lizzie smirks, altering her stance to better counter whatever punch she's about to throw her way.
"You should see me fight sober. Maybe, then you'd stand a chance."
The captain raises an eyebrow.
"Drinking this early? I suppose—just this once—it's good for your health."
"And why's that?"
Lizzie barely manages to avoid being decked across the face, only for the captain to spin around behind her, catching her around the throat before she has time to react. One well-placed knee in the back and suddenly they're standing over her, leveraging Lizzie's own body into a tight chokehold. Air stops flowing into her lungs.
In her ear, the captain taunts.

The ceiling flickers with shades of blue from the television that hasn't been turned off for the past eight hours or so, some news station anchor talking about the destruction left on that island off Santa Monica pier again and Emizel has just enough empathy to be grateful Shilo fell asleep.
He doesn't move at the sound of Arthur's voice, thought it does pull him from his mindless stupor. His senses heighten and he hears a heated argument about six rooms down, a late driver park by the lobby, Shilo's soft whimper in the bathtub-turned-bed from what is probably not even that bad of a nightmare. Cheap hotel soap hits his nose, shitty sheets scratch along his bare arms, and the leftover twang of metal just won't seem to stop tasting bitter in his mouth; more reminders that, yeah, he's here in the middle of nowhere, Arizona, with no home and no friends and nothing left of his unlife.
At least it's better than No Brakes. Kind of.

He had always seemed so confident, so sure of himself and his goals to the point of tunnel vision, so focused on strength that he almost lost all of what made him human in the first place to take it.

The sensation of flying and falling and drowning are all too similar in the somatic memory. Jay cannot tell if the chill that’s becoming a part of the marrow in her bones is a product of wind whipping against her skin, or if it is the frigid depths of the ocean. Perhaps the product of a near-death hysteria, her brain supplies her with the fact that there are four potential oceans that may be her tomb. She cannot recall the names of any. She cannot recall why she knows what flying feels like, why she knows how the sun feels on her skin when it sings in tandem with the late summer breeze over the sea when the sky is clear and beautiful, why she feels the echo of a laugh in her chest as she extends her arms. There's a longing building somewhere in the back of her mind for the concept of freedom.

Reuben had taught him this too, bony shoulder pressed to bony shoulder, uncharacteristically soft with him in the little house they’d found. The rhythm is simple, a “beginner’s tune” according to him. But regardless of what he said about it, Reuben had been proud when he figured it out, giving him a grin. (That same grin had been turned on him after…after what? The memory he’s grasping for slides away.)
