“Brilliant driving,” she muttered bitterly at herself.
Lando sat alone behind the transporters, still half in her race suit, balaclava hanging around her neck. Dirt smeared one side of her cheek. Her knuckles were raw from punching the wall beside her at least twice already. How could she have crashed? It didn’t make sense to her at all— she could still hear the impact. It had been lap 37. A tiny mistake is all it took. tiny mistake over the top of the hill; rear clipped the wall, then another. It was over for Lando. A DNF. She felt so humiliated. A DNF when the race wasn’t even halfway over.
Earlier, the replay of her crash had already spread across every screen in pit lane. Commentators called it “uncharacteristic.” The team? They said it was “unfortunate.”
Lando called it stupid.
That was all it took at Bathurst.

It was all stupid– he felt like some lovesick teenager, not a grown man who’d seen his share of violence and hardship. The way his pulse quickened when she laughed at something Hosea said around the campfire, or how he found excuses to walk past her tent just to catch a glimpse of her mending clothes or braiding her hair. The very air seemed charged whenever they were in the same space together. The weight of his desire pressed down on him like a physical thing, heavier than any pack he’d ever carried across state lines. It settled in his shoulders, making his movements stiff and unnatural around the others. He wondered how long he could carry this burden before it consumed him entirely, before someone– Dutch, Arthur, hell, even Micah– noticed the way he watched her when he thought no one was looking.

Instead of doing his damn job for once, Wade decides to stick it to the law and runs away with Logan. A few months after they eloped (ignore anything Logan says that's absolutely what happened), Wade gets intel on the man Logan had been hunting all these years: Pinkerton Agent Andrew Milton, who has cropped up near New Hanover, chasing after in the infamous Van der Linde gang.
What could possibly go wrong?
