Naruto groaned, dragging a hand down his face. “What do you want me to say, Sasuke?”
“I want you to tell me why you’re doing this,” his voice cracked slightly at the edges, the mask he always wore starting to fracture. “The real reason.”
“Because that’s what people expect of me. Because it’s what I should—“ Naruto cut himself off, the rest of the sentence stuck in his throat, his eyes stinging.
“Since when do you do what’s expected of you?”
He drew in a slow breath, trying to steady the erratic beat of his own heart.
“What does it matter now, Sasuke?” Naruto asked at last, his voice dropping to barely a whisper. “Whatever I say, it’s not going to change anything. I’m still getting married. And you’re still going to be gone most of the time, miles away, gods know where.”
“But would you want it to change?”
Or, Naruto and Sasuke talk before Naruto gets married.
