Five stares at his back, his mind stumbling over his brother’s words, uncomprehending. He’s held his heart out in his hands for them to see, and all they’ve done is step on it, dismissing him, like his efforts are for nothing.
He can’t help the laughter that spills out of his mouth.
It has been for nothing. Stop the apocalypse, save the world, keep his family alive—those are his goals, but what has he accomplished? Nothing! He’s stood in the wreckage of his hubris at thirteen, burying the only people in the world who mattered, and he’s about to do it again, in the same body as the first time no less.
Isn’t that ironic? Isn’t that hilarious?
Five laughs harder. He laughs so hard it hurts.
In which Five has a well-deserved breakdown, then gets a hug.

he was one of the few people he knew who thought that way. the only person, actually. the rare others were indifferent to the idea at most, like veronica, who boldly declared she didn't want a mark tying her down until she was ready to do it herself. even she still thought it would be kind of cute (and a convenient way of getting archie to choose her, not betty, because of course he would be her soulmate).
jughead was the least deserving person, possibly in the whole world, to get a soulmark.
so, naturally, the universe granted him one anyways.

Summary
“There we are.” Stede coos. Ed keeps his gaze on the blanket he’s holding tight, his expression a concoction of anxiety and sheepishness. His eyes dart up to Stede’s face for only a moment before shooting back down to the blanket, which he picks at the edge of absentmindedly.
Stede looks at him confusedly. “Ed?”
“Mm?”
Stede tenderly cups Ed’s face. With a slight sigh, Ed leans into it, which is at least typical of him.
“Is everything quite alright, love?”
“Mm…” Ed hums, leaning further into the contact. “Yeah.” He hugs the blanket a little closer. “Yeah…”
Ed learns to open up a bit more. Stede learns how to handle it.
