“So then, where do you go?” Soap had managed to get the words out while in between rounds of sparring, drinking obscene amounts of water in between syllables. When Ghost looked at him like he had grown a third arm – confused, curious, mildly terrified – he clarified. “During mail call?”

Soap could identify almost every single emotion Ghost had, even through the mask and the greasepaint and the faceplate. But the forced neutrality? That wasn’t quite yet decrypted. He could understand the half-hearted shrug Ghost threw him. “Depends,”

    or

Soap takes Ghost home with him and Ghost becomes a part of the family.

“Dean... how did... how did this even happen?”

Dean looks away. His fingers curl into fists. “I screwed up, okay? I—I used him to kill Lucifer but he kept control, released me once, and stole back control permanently.”

“You killed Lucifer and now you're working with him.”

Dean slaps his thighs and stands up quickly, pacing away from the couch. “It's not like I asked God to resurrect him! I'm not even—we're not working together! The only thing he even needs me for, really, is to act as a God Battery!” He puts a hand to his head and sighs heavily. “I don't even know what he was hoping Michael would do. 'Up our forces' he said like... like he'd thought they would work together. And keep Heaven from crashing down.”

“Michael isn't going to let Heaven fall,” Adam says.

“Why does he even care about it?” Dean asks. “There's no angels up there!”

“My mother is up there,” Adam answers.

    “Oh,” Dean whispers, looking lost.

Adam hangs his head. Michael has been quiet and he can't blame him. “What's the goal here, Dean?”

Held in the tight embrace of his naga partner's arms and tail, Ghost is more than wet and open enough to take his cock.

Until he isn't, and something wider presses into him.

In the ER, it's a common joke that not even HR has Robby's phone number. Before he goes on sabbatical, Robby hands Dennis 10 digits scrawled on a post-it note. For emergencies.

    Summary

“I don’t know what I want to do.” Dennis admits. He looks over at Robby, staring at the side of his face. They’ve been closer than this before, but being in the car together feels strangely intimate. “What would you do?”

“If it was me… I’d at least go for that dinner. But I’m not you. You need to do what’s best for you, Dennis.”

There it is again, his name from Robby’s mouth. It makes his attention linger, still staring at Robby’s face. Dennis is once again overwhelmed with the urge to just bury his face in Robby’s neck and pretend the world doesn’t exist, but that’s not the grown up thing to do. He squeezes his eyes shut for a second, rubs his temples with his fingertips as Robby continues, “Carry your patients with you as much or as little as you like. Find your balance. But remember that you’re human.”

Dennis opens his eyes to the countryside fading away and the city bleeding in. He knows Robby is right. That’s what he needs: balance.

In his last year of med school, Dennis learns to let go of the guilt that plagues him.
